No, I think sadly the argument is that somehow we are...

Yes, really, I am doing work. Honest.

I disagree with Paul a little. Since we want a structure that fits the reality we perceive, the labelling is not solely consensual. It depends on the structure of what we perceive.

Besides "0", "1", "first" refer to already existing structures. So the point is about wether the referred structure fits the perceived structure.

As for the meaning of zero, I can think easily of cases were it doesn't mean "nothing". Like in coordinates, indexes (which is the case of the levels of the dungeon), or w00t.

Now, should we add the "giraffe" option to the poll? I'd vote for it!

No no no, the HoC is 1 and when you go down one level you are on level 10.. After that you arrive at level 11 and then level 100..

The levels should all have distinct human readable names burnt firmly into the depths of the dungeon so the numbers could all be forgotten. We'd just say the Hall of Champions or the Dragon's Den or The One With All Those #!"#¤& Scorpions. Everyone would be happy happy joy joy and play DM happily ever after. :)

I hope doctors count from 1. Imagine asking for your 1st finger to be amputated and he cut the next one off?

Fingers have names though, like index, thumb, ring and pinky so there you go - no numbering used

Woudl the tumb count as one , not..in which case, woud the thumb be our 'zero'?

Paul, Beo: Indeed, but the doctor would use the fingers' latin names in order to impress you and prevent real communication.

Ok, let us all make a pact never to cut off each others fingers...it could get too confusing!

Beo: Speaking of cutting of fingers: Have you ever seen "4 rooms"?
