Bi weekly challenge due may 11

Post by cowsmanaut »

ok, here is your first challenge. Due May 11! Yay!

An old and foreboading structure. Can be made of anything, can be anywhere, and can be any kind of man made tall standing creation.. just needs to be a little bit creepy/shadowy/mysterious...

Can be in any medium...

After about an hour's worth of not-very-hard work, someone's produced an entry already, ooh shock :O.

This location is situated near a small human village. No-one knows how or when it came to be - it's just always been there. Nothing seems to happen there - the very air around it is still and silent. Once, it was said, a wandering bard took a bet with some of the locals to enter the cave alone. He set out for the cave entrance, but was never seen again after departing the village. However, a small boy said he'd seen the bard running away that night, laughing and clutching the bag of bet money. Either way, the bard was never seen again and people were left to form their own conclusions as to what had happened to him.
What lies within this cave or tunnel is entirely unknown, but the unblinking eye seems to watch all who would dare to come near. What keeps people away from this place is either superstition, or a very primal fear stirred by the essence of the air around it.

Anyway sorry, have to give these things a history, however brief. Dunno why. But umm yeah we are meant to be submitting pictures, not stories hehe.
Here is the link to the pic. Done entirely in biro (which must make it sound SO fantastic :P) while I was watching telly earlier. It's old, hopefully sort of foreboding...at least part of it LOOKS man-made (well not necessarily "man" - there's no saynig which species carved it...), though it's not very tall lol. Still, it's spooky and mysterious so meh :P.

When I can get Photoshop back I'll be able to put a bit of colour into my pics and maybe then they'll look a bit less crap lol. Till then you're stuck with biro lines I'm afraid :P.

Lol I didn't even think of it like that - I just started drawing and that's what came out. Didn't want to do the obvious pic of a tomb/crypt/mausoleum or an old deserted mansion or whatever, so I ended up doing a errmm cave...thingy...with an eye carved in the top...and errmm...organic, tentacle-shaped thingys around the entrance sort of beckoning in a spooky way... Well okay it's not really spooky at all but meh :P.

really, it could be a good entrace into the dungeon. with two DM buttons on the right.. but the only problem is that dungeon doors originally opens horizontally, and it seems your "mouth" may open only vertically (up/down). (at least I consider that "mouth" as an entrance to the underground dungeons - but I might be wrong) ;)
background remains... let`s say it`s a rock.

My "mouth" doesn't open at all - it's like a cave entrance so there is no door, just this black expanse leading away to no-one-knows-where.

EDIT - Photoshop is transferring to me over MSN Messenger as I type this, so I may well actually colour the aforelinked pic and re-upload it :).

Lol, started playing with the sagrada familia but the lighting was crap to photoshop it into dark and crepy so went for feiry and imposing. WIP, don't think I'll carry on as something about it isn't working.

You want us to draw this, or find existing structures?

This is the 'needles eye', a short walk from my house and one of many follies. Very creepy place:

I might go up and take a better picture, those examples don't quite capture the atmosphere.

The folly is part of the local wentworth estate: its an incredible place.

There are three temples too: I'll get photos if you are interested.

I'll see if I can get up this week and take some moody shots.

Oh, can't forget the centrepiece, the Wentworth Woodhouse itself!

Yeah! Very odd place, little known somehow, its like going back 200 years in time. Lucky to have so much local history and spooky stuff. I could fill pages of ominous pics!

Objection! PaulH is just using this contest as an excuse to show off all the really cool-looking places he has within 5 minutes of his house lol.
But yeah Paul like Wuffy said, go back at night - some of those by moonlight must look so funky :D.

Cows could always extend the deadline of this one or something...I haven't finished colouring mine yet - I'm gonna do it in a minute and upload it when I'm done. I presumed that the current deadline for this one is midnight on Thursday, so 24 hours from now...
And who will think up the subject of the next contest?

EDIT - Ugh I have the last vineload of leaves to colour but it's ten to three and I can't be arsed to finish it tonight. I'll do it tomorrow lol. So it looks like my "proper" entry will be late too :P.

OOh, by the way Linflas, forgot to say I rather like your picture -- quite moody and mysterious. I think the sky would work better as blue, but other than that: cool!

thanks gambit ! you're very right for the colors, this orange doesn't fit with the rest.
and again sorry about the collage, i would have prefered to make something by myself but i'm totally not able to pencil some architecture correctly, i prefer organic stuff :)

HOORAY finished the bugger...hopefully I'll remember NOT to put any dinky little fiddly details in future pics, lol - the leaves on the vines took me ages. I might bother with more effort at shading and stuff on future pics too, but meh...here is the finished result anyway :P.

I like Cows work as fantasy, but you'd never actually find that in RL! Some of the others look like they might actually exist.. or do ;-)
