I noticed, that this forum is already 5 years old !
what was it`s story? I mean, I read quite from these locked forums, like Cows net 54 forums and unoficial DM BBS site, just to learn a history..
When will be the 5th anniversary?

If it's already five years old, then the fifth anniversary has already passed...
I seem to recall the forum used to be a sort of bluey-purply colour, when I first joined (March '03)...I think there were a couple of DM forums and Cows or someone merged 'em together into one big uber combo-forum to just make it easier - I think the blue/purple one I mentioned was just an RTC forum.
Something like that anyway.

The history:

Back before I joined a nice person called Daniel Durgen (of Moutain of A' kir dungeon fame, well no, he's more famous for the BBS and accompanying site actually) created a BBS for everyone to chat on. REgulars like Gambiut and cows (then drake) and alandale and zyx used to go there and chat, DMJava was conceived then disappeared the suddenly came out of nowhere again there, etc. Daniel drifted away but the BBS carried on until finally the webspace was closed down when the host was wiping out all it's forums ; (

By that time there were five other forums - Ian Clark had created a DM forum on ezboard that everyone went to, DMJava was released and had it's forums (which got busy as DM JAva got a slashdpot mention), GG had moved from DMute to starting RTC so there were those forums, and Christophe had added forums to his encyclopaedia, and at that time Paul S started doing CSBwin so he added metnion to all his stuff there. Cows also had a starting DM website, so attached a simple forum there too.

Anyway, then the ezboard webspace that hosted DMweb, DMJava and RTC started including pop ups and banner ads, so cows offered to create a joint webspace beyond the tiny forum he used to have - this one!

As I'd already grabbed all the BBS posts manually I stuck them on this forum. Alos, cows ones got archived too. I forget , I think I also then moved Ian's DMWeb pots here (it could have been Gambit) becuse of the pop ups and to have a central place. And then Gambit moved all of the RTC forums here in one move, inlcuding preserving dataestamps and log ins. He also then made it possible to have the DME posts moved here too (except for upload ones and the general) along with the log in details.

DM JAva forums have always been too big to move here like Gambit did to RTC (especially given the amount of dead posts there too) and I certainly wouldn't move them by hand again, I don't have that free time anymore!

So yes, that was how it all came to get squished together. So yeah, I found DMute and stuff then the BBS quite close to when it finally came to an end and soonish after Ian's DMWeb became the new place to be, but if you look back at the history before that there's quite alot done before, and especiqally some older BBS posts now lost before we realised the webspace was getting shrunk :(

Ahh it was the Ezboard one I was in, I think - I remember the thing about the pop-ups and we'd've had to pay money to stop 'em.
Well this forum is very cool anyway so yay gratz to all the people who made it ;).

I believe I still have $20 sitting on the RTC ezboard forums that never got used!

And it was Christophe who did the hard work moving all the DME posts here, not me.

Other than that, pretty good summary Beo! How long do you think we will all continue to chat on here -- another 5 years?

A meeting of DM peeps would be really cool...trouble is, we're so spread over the world (mostly in Europe I believe but there's people like Cows and Soph who're in USA/Canada), it'd probably be hard to get all of us together. I very much doubt I'd be able to get to anything that wasn't in England somewhere :(.

I think Lunever is right, London would be the best place. It's a fact that most of the users on this board are from the UK, and for everybody else, London is definitely the easiest accessible place in the UK. What about a weekend in the summer of 2007? The 20th anniversary of DM would be the best opportunity for such a meeting; too bad that the distance will probably prevent people from North America from coming. :(

Presumably we'd all meet up in a pub or something - that's what I've done for previous EQ-meets...and by "pub" I mean a place where people talk and drink and stuff, not some crappy joint with head-pounding "music" booming out so no-one can hear anyone else unless they're using a megaphone :P.
Unless of course anyone actually lives in London and we can all gatecrash their house or something ;).

Well, there ARE Londoners here, even among the regulars. Yet living in London does not necessarily mean having enough space to host a bunch of forumers.

Oh I didn't mean staying overnight or whatever lol - I just meant as an alternative to gathering in, say, a pub. We could all bring our own food and stuff ;).

for the people, who rather won`t visit UK, you could arrange a special meeting with ex-FTL staff here on the flashchat. As they know about that site, so I don`t think that would be a big problem for them. It`s just a matter of turning on the computer for a while. What`s the official date, when first time Dungeon Master has been released?

If I recall correctly, Gambit mentioned several times that none of the ex-FTLers are really interested in DM anymore. We should respect that.

Should we indeed meet in London, I think we should take a whole weekend, not just one evening.

Trant: I though they`re lurking here sometimes.. but if they`re really not interested, I agree we shouldn`t bother them

Part of that meeting could be anyway to go to an internet caffee at an appointed time to say hello to anybody who's interested and just can't travel to London.

OMG, I just found Gambit and Zyx`s wishlist about Dmute from 2000! It`s a thrue history !!!
COMMENTS
>1) Better memory management...
up to George

>2) A true copy and paste...
not easy: If you don't want to clone the tile, you have to create every
single object and creature contained in the tile with the same set of relations!

>3) Massive improvements to the interface...
Up to George and Gambit

>4) True compatibility between all versions of DM...
Up to George

>5) A built in text editor...
I think it's very complex, but I'll be willing to help investigating.

>6) Correct graphics for editing CSB save games...
Up to George and Gambit

>7) Correct names for all objects.
We have all the lists.

MY WISHLIST
13) The list of all the objects already created in the dungeon, with their
hexadecimal ID, their coordonates and wether they're chested or not.
This way we could manage much more efficiently the limited
number of objects, by referring to the same ID when we want
to clone an object like a wall inscription for example.
We could also detect if we have unused objects. And we could know how much
place is left yet.

14) An option to see the binary values instead of the hexadecimal ones.

15) For each level, the number of monsters allowed should be shown

16) Complete list of the triggering objects.

17) Complete list of the different tiles (pits and teleporters, doors stuck partially open, false walls)

1 Check box to make monster generators always work.

19) Bashable and spell sensitive doors.

PRESSURE PADS

20) Possibility to edit a pressure pad even when the tile is not a simple
floor.

21) The direction-specific effect for pressure pads

22) Pressure pads activated by the party+object.

23) The possibility to make heard message.

24) Duration ranges from 0 to 7 for pressure pads, not 0 to 6.

25) A check box for each function instead of "toggle 1" and "toggle 2".
For example: activate/disactivate, normal/toggle, step in/step out, no limit/once.

26) If you activate a wall object you must precise the direction
0, 10,20 or 30. It should be done automaticly.

WALL OBJECTS
27) Better interface for wall objects with the possibility, with a simple
optionbox, to create a swith on/switch out.
It's always the same procedure, so it could be automatized.

2 With this same interface, another option for object morphing.

29) The alcoves with the "needs constant weight" effects.

30) Wall objects with counters (interact once, twice, etc.)

31) A checkbox to add or not a click sound.

31) Wall objects from where you can retrieve an object.

32) A check box: Keyholes that don't eat the keys

33) The possibility to create spells vents, weapons vents and vents throwing
the objects we put inside. With the possibility to choose the kind of spell
or weapon, the power, if it's a single shot or a double,

I can provide the information for all the points I mentionned.
