What is your funniest moment in Dungeon Master?

Post by Steve-B »

Well I guess the title says it all. What has been your most funniest moment whilst playing Dungeon Master?

For me the funniest moment happened quite late at night. A mate of mine was round at my house and watching as I progressed deeper into the dungeon. We had been to the bottom of the stairwell and heard that bizarre 'clunk clunk' noise and we wondered what it was. Later as we made it to level 13 we encountered chaos for the first time and panicked! lol. In our haste to escape we fell down a pit and landed smack in-front of mr 'clunk clunk' himself... the dragon. It open it's gob and roared-out a massive fireball - we almost shat ourselves! We actually screamed it was so shocking! LOL!

Well that is one of my best memories of Dungeon Master.

DM proved to give the highest possible level of engrossment when it was getting dark. The light level suddenly dropped down a bit, and - as usual - I cast a light spell, but nothing happened. I cast another light spell and still nothing happened. After the third light spell I realised that one of the 3 light bulbs im my room where I was playing DM had burnt out. Awesome game.

Now that is transcendental!

Trying to peer around blind corners by looking around the monitor is another one...

Oh gawd I do that one...and in more 3D games I find myself peering up and down to see up/down/over hills and things too...and squinting to see through the darkness as though that's gonna make a difference :P.

I used to try to peer around corners all the time, both in DM and in Doom. When I first played DM, the tension really got to me. I was crawling around the worm level and was really scared by the worms. But what scared me even more were the pictures of Lord Chaos' face on the walls, even so much that I once turned off the computer because I couldn't stand the tension...

Scorpion noises really freak me out, so I try never to let one actually attack me. The dragon roar is one of those "omg I just shat myself" noises too, even when coming from a rat or hellhound (just because they share the sound with dragons). You hear that sound from a distance and just know you're abouit to get smacked upside the head with an overly large Fireball...
I think I've said all this stuff on another thread somewhere, but it was ages ago so I don't mind saying it again ;).

It's amazing how atmospheric DM was considering what we expect from our games today. It truly shows that our imagination is far more powerful than enything we experience first hand. I sometimes wish I could back to that simpler time...

...though I still love modern games and all they bring to the party -- when they are done *well*.

But alas, so many games these days seem to value graphics over gameplay. So you get these phenomenally realistic-looking environments, and yet so little to do in them.
Obviously not all games are like that - if Oblivion's gameplay is along the lines of Morrowind, I imagine that's pretty fantastic (if you like Morrowind - I know some people here don't).
Eye candy is one thing, but I think the brain candy is more important. Hmm I'm not keen on that word "candy" actually...sounds rather American...brain sweets, then :D.

DM is incredibly atmospheric. I value that above all else in a game. I think the last game to really 'grab' me like that was System Shock 2, and thats going back 7 years now. I hope BioShock lives up to its reputation.

I played Morrowind on and off for months, its a brilliant game, full of depth. Oblivion is also fantastic, but hasn't gripped me quite as much as Morrowind did. Apart from the graphics they're pretty much one and the same.

I think games are much easier now. I don't know what it is about games like DM but they are more involving somehow. Like Gambit said, it's the power of the imagination that completely reels you in.

The Looking Glass Games Thief 1& 2 and System Shock 2 were indeed some of the finest I've played in terms of atmosphere. I still get chills up my neck thinking of the first few missions in Thief -- zombies making really horrible moaning and skittering spiders hidden in the dark.... fantastic stuff!

In fact, I might have to play it again!

The first few times I played SS2 I was absolutely terrified. I'd be playing it alone in the dark and then I'd hear a hybrid (zombie) moaning from some distant corridor, and then it's come running over with a rusty wrench, "KILL ME!" Awesome.

I found it equally brilliant in coop mode. A friend and I must have been through it 3 or 4 times on coop. Great game.

I think DM is one of those games that works well with 2 people, solving the puzzles together and killing mummies, fantastic.

In response to the original question, I remember we used to have DM on the Atari ST many moons ago, showing on the ancient colour telly (Allegedly portable, but made entirely out of valves and took three people to carry (despite having a useless handle on the top). but I digress...) Anyway, I thought it was incredibly funny to observe my brother instinctively ducking at the sound of the dragon roar instead of actually moving his characters and screaming in anguish at about the same time his characters died a screaming fiery death...

Other fond memories in the halcon days of chidhood was the first encounter with Rats. "OMG, I can hear a dragon. Oh, it's just a rat, oops there goes my priest..." Ah, those were the days... :D

Funny you should mention the Thief games, Gammy - when I was up north the friend whose house we were staying in had an X-Box with "Thief, Deadly Shadows" (the third Thief game) on it. I'd heard of "Thief" but never played any of 'em before. Loved the game (although that Cradle place...those black-figure guards...omg coming round a corner into one of those JEEEEZ heart attack and a half!), but didn't get to finish it before we came back down. May be getting an X-Box myself soon, however, and that game is on my list. Found both the first Thief games in a shop the other day and have since installed/started playing the first one. Technically there's not much to them - sneak around in the dark, don't get caught, blackjack/backstab/avoid people, and nick stuff. Yet it's really cool. And for some reason the zombies scare the crap out of me so I just leg it as fast as I can in the opposite direction when I hear one groaning ;).
Aaaaaanyway, before I derail this thread yet further...
