Memorable Moments...
Hi all,
I've been lurking on this site on and off for the past year and I'm amazed at how popular this game still is, so I decided to register and ask a question...
I wanted to know what was the part of Dungeon Master / CSB that stays most vividly in your mind? I haven't touched DM for over 10 years but the part I recall with the most fondness is Level 3 - all the rooms especially Time is of the Essence, which took me a couple of days to work out. I'm impressed with myself that after all this time I can name all the rooms without breaking a sweat (won't do it though - you know them as well as I do).
So, if anyone would like to share their fondest or most memorable moments of DM, it'd be welcome.
Thank you and Hello!

Nice question ... while it is not the best part, I think the bit that always stuck in my mind out a quite a few was the scorpion rooms, especially near the end.
Out of all the interesting monsters light the armours or the couatyls,, out of all the interesting areas liek the level five rooms, level ix riddles, tomb of the firestaff - jsut the 'whisper whisper' of a creature you know can kill you quite handily was such a tense moment for me when I first played it!

Hi Beowuuf,
"The Riddle Room" - Yes!!! Like I said I haven't played the game for 10 years but that brought back a sudden rush of stuff - "I see all, I see none" that was it wasn't it? I wasted a lot of time on that! That leads me to one of the other rooms, something about the grave of a king who lusts after gold? My dad helped me get the solution to that one - he said why don't you try blah blah blah, and it worked... heh. And there was something about codes? I clicked those hidden switches randomly for ages then all of a sudden the wall opened up! I can safely say that was what it was like for everyone...
So any more? This is having a real domino effect on me...

Good grief, that's right!
Milias and Filias! I remember! I used to wonder if there was some story behind those names, like were they brothers or father and son or something...?
The walking armour mentioned by Beowuuf gave me a bit of a jolt as well, I remember I had a walkthrough of the game but it never mentioned the armour and it shocked the snot out of me because I wasn't expecting them... not that I used the walkthrough much. Maybe that's part of the reason I love the game so much, I worked it out mostly by myself - but I can't remember the parts I needed help for.
I remember seeing the dragon for the first time... I kicked it to death! Gained about 4 ninja levels in the process! I LOVE the way this is all coming back to me!
Hi Ameena!

Hmm, how about the first real battle you had to face in DM? That's the worm hell that you are forced to unleash upon yourself at the end of level 4, of course.
I liked coming up with new spells-- messing around with the runes, seeing what you get-- who needs scrolls?
Oh, and the way I dove behind the couch (I was 8 at the time, give me a break... hehe) when I saw my first scorpion!

Oh jeez the Scorpion noise I still find freaky today. The other scary noise is that made by Dragons, Rats, and (in CSB) Hellhounds. It's only scary 'cause it's the Dragon noise...'cause when you hear it suddenly in the distance you just know you are about to get smacked upside the head with a Fireball, yet it still makes you jump when you do. Well, me, anyway. So if you step next to a rat or hellhound, you still crap yourself 'cause they make the same noise lol.

Wow.
I forgot about the noises.
I can vividly remember (it's coming back to me so perfectly) when I got my first Skeleton Key (memories!) and went all the way down the stairs and heard that almost "tick tock" kind of noise, then it gradually deeper and more foreboding when whatever it was that was making those sounds got closer - "thump-thump."
Love that dragon - big red freak... But werren't you disappointed when it made the same sound as a rat? Pffft...
Hi Ameena! Thanks for replying!
Loved the scorpions - I remember the only other "unique" noise was the armours, that crashing sound.. oh and the skeletons - I remember me and my big sister were playing it and we both thought at first that it sounded like a piece of rusty metal being scraped along the ground... Well, I was 14 when I first played it..
A big hello to all of you

Hmm what else...well, walking along on any level with spellcasting mobs and having a fireball.lightning bolt/poison bolt hitting you suddenly, as I mentioned before with the dragons, but with no warning 'cause it's a silent caster like a Beholder or Spell Vine...omg how annoying are those bloody Spell Vines on Level 12? Arrrrrgh, hate them, even now...

Ameena - Spell Vines!!!???
I think we're talking about the same things, Ameena - I mentioned on another post that I called them Ethereal Triffids - Spell Vines does sound punchier but a bit too feral, you know, for the Dungeon Master world...
Only been here five minutes and I 'm already putting people down!
Oh yes, I can remember the Fire Elementals and how abstract they seemed; the way they kept coming back to life even after you got that cloud of greasy grey smoke that signifies you've killed something... oh yeah, that smoke!
The glugging sound when you eat or drink, the desperate scream when all your characters get wiped out...
What a great game.

Because about 36 will be spam-bots!
I think when you walk through your first illusionary wall, whereever it would be, and suddenly realsie 'umm, how many ofthese things have I not spotted before???'
I forget what level I first went 'oh, you can walk through that' - it would be embarrassing if it were 9, it was possibly eight i nthe huge area - but to discover secret little areas in the worm level and even the six rooms riddle level was quite something

Illusionary walls - although I just called them fake walls (I didn't have a good vocabulary 10 years back).
But when you said that the writing on the wall "When is Rock not Rock" came back to me... all these little touches are the most meaningful. Thank you, Beowuuf!
I remember when you reach level seven and you see a hidden switch after the first door and there's a scroll inside that says "The Keys to Passage Lie Hidden Deep" I got a chill; it was like that was where your adventure really started. I remember how neat that alcove looked, with the scroll placed inside...
If I play this game again, will it destroy the rose tinted vision I have of it?
Or does it stand the test of time? That question is why I've always been wary of revisiting it.

Spell Vines are the things you find on Level 12 of DM (with the Giant Spiders and Black Knights). They look like...well, like vines...two brown vines entwined together, with a blue orb at the top. And, as also implied in the name, they cast spells

OK Ameena!
They'll always be Ethereal Triffids to me - and we are talking about the same thing!
But what more could you expect from a Red Dwarf fan?
What did you call Gigglers? I used to call them Laughing F~*#ers. You?
Anyone else have any odd names for creatures?

What's Ethereal Triffids got to do with Red Dwarf? I'm a pretty strong Dwarfer myself, you know!
I call the little blue-armed gits "Thieves", 'cause that's what the book calls 'em, and that's what they are, the little bloody feckers
.
I dunno why the book called Flying Screamers "Flying Screamers" though. That is, the tentacled slimy things on Level 5 that chuck Poison Bolts at you.

Hi and welcome.
I've got to say the stone golem on level 7 I believe it was, has to be a fav. I think it's where you get the last Ra key? (Been a while since I actually played it!) and the Deth Knights. I don't remeber which level they are on, but on the original DM, they can only go so far down the corridor, and stop right on the corner. That used to be fun teasing them, and blasting them with a fireball. It was a good way to get ya stats up too.
And the screamer room, level 4??? I would spend days there, regenerating them to higher the stats of the party as well, then hurling the slices down the stairs nearby to get those ninja levels up....he...he...

Ra Keys, Kelly - I haven't even been thinking about keys! The Winged Key was my favourite, so unique, I recall I threw it around a bit to see if it would fly further...
I remember that golem because I tried to kill it with fireballs and it took about a year (exaggerating slightly) to dust it down... I also tried to finish off the Deth Knights (and yes, that IS what they're called in CSB!) with fireballs, it took forever.
I'm laughing out loud at some of the memories that are racing through my head - eating cheese, worm rounds, getting to a fountain after levels of trudging, the thrill of seeing a staircase after a particularly long slog...
Oh dear...

I can remember we used to fight the dragon (in DM) by training him round one of the pillars in the bit through the door, with the Altar of Rebirth (as we use to call them, not Vi Altars/Altars of Vi), zapping him with Fireballs when he came round the corner. Now I use a similar tactic, but in a two-by-two square in an open space, and with swords and the Firestaff instead of plain Fireballs hehe
.
I used to find fighting Dragons so scary, but now it's great fun

I ended up loving that dragon, too! As I said, I kicked him / her to dusty grey death; it took about half an hour but the ninja levels were worth it...
l always used to call them Vi Altars but I don't recall ever really using them much: hey I remember the scroll "New Life for Old Bones," right?
Oh yeah... I remember that I was disappointed that the bones that you found on level 14 didn't come back to life - that would have been awesome if they were the bones of a champion from the mirrors or something, maybe they could have a quick talk with you and give their thanks before running out of the dungeon. A nice link with the beginning of the adventure after so much journeying.
I am a sentimental old fool.
I'm not expecting better graphics, I just want the 'feel' of the game to be the same...

Why are people awake at 3.00am? If you live in Britain, that is...
Pits! Just came to me! Remember how you used to die by falling down a pit? Then when you're well into the game you'd fall down a pit and it'd do NOTHING?
The pleasures of levelling up... I used to like my 'yellow' player the most - it looked so vivid when old 'whatever I named him' would level up...

Have you tried RTC or CSBWin yet? They are the main clones people use...I'm an RTCer myself. Love the editor - you can make a dungeon with pretty much any kind of trap or trigger or puzzle you can think of. Well, I can't think of very much so it's alright for me
. And of course there's all the custom dungeons like Towers of Chaos, Conflux III, and all that...
Back to reminiscing - did you always take a party of four? I never consider not taking a party of four till I'd been on this forum a while and heard people talking about it and then thought "Hmm, I never thought of trying that!". Now I take a party of two, Re-Incarnated. I think we always used to Resurrect, back on the Atari.
Anyway, hmm, 3:10am...I am going to bed unless there's another post somewhere after I send this

Ooh, don't go to bed yet!!!
No, I haven't tried CSBWin yet... I'm not particularly computer literate, seeing as I prefer to live in the past...
In answer to your question, I had a party of four in my first few games but my major one, when I levelled up as much as I could (Archmaster Priest, Mon Master Wizard, Pal Master Fighter and Mon Master Ninja - I remember it well because I still have the disk that the game is saved on!) it was only with one character. I'm pretty sure it was Alex Ander but I reincarnated him as Adso of Melk, in homage to The Name of the Rose.
I was an unusual child.
Due to my computer illiteracy, I can't download DM or CSB, much as I'd love to... some idiot proof instructions would mean a lot, Ameena.
I want to fall down those pits again!

hi LunarC!
You can play the DM/CSB now through the CSBwin ( check this out: http://www.dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin/Gam ... ption.html )
or RTC (check this out: http://ragingmole.com/RTC/ ).
There are also a lot of complex custom dungeons, for example
http://bprieu.club.fr/DM/Conflux.htm
There are also a lot of editors so you can make your own dungeon, if you want.
welcome to the forums and have a nice play!!!
my best memory from CSB was killing, the dragon - after struggle battle - when he left interesting stuff... Leg mail etc.

Yeah, Paul S, cretaor of CSBwin, takes great pride in making this likes to make things simple and idiot proof. He has packages where he can of all the games that are self contained
