I saved up for ages when i was a kid to buy War in middle earth(WIME)
I bought it for the spectrum, I seem to remeber it took ages to load and more often than not it would crash at the last gasp, when i did play it I would play for hours and hours and hours 'cause I hated the idea of waiting for it to load - and possible crash after all that waiting - I could never get the dwarven units from the north into battle they moved so slowly...Ah those were the days :)

right, The Civilization !!!

I was just playing 2nd part lately (I`ve got also 3rd and 4th parts, but never really liked the graphics - I like an "oldchool" one).

BTW: The settlers. Part 2 (the best one I think). I wonder what do you think about the new design of old "Settlers2" (first version from 1996, second - 2006)? They changed nothing except the design (= no big changes in "inner" engine), but I just hate the new version. The 3D games are much less readable for me than 2D one.
Here I like old school design, too!

I played the new Settlers 2. I must say. I like it. They removed the Vikings though. :/

:o Wow so many of those games bring back memories... Say I'm suprised that no one mentioned the game Faerie Tale. It was free roaming and had a similar layout to Neverwinter nights, but was out in 86'. I probably spent as much time on that as I did DM.

Können die fiesen Schweine net ma aufhörn mit dem Scheiß? Sonst klatscht et gleich, echt jetz Junge!

I do remember the game "Fairy Tale Adventure" and indeed have fond memories of it. Like I said, a list such as this one is highly subjective, and 10 games is usually way too few. But I think at least the top 3 are definite, and the others deserve their place as well IMO.

Ahhh, the Avatar. Well I found it in use on another forum where I was reading the Order of the stick, and I couldn't resist using it.

As for Faery tale, I found some more info on it...perhaps even a couple of sites I can download it...or try to anyways.

Essentially this is what it's about

As for the pic here, that' just in the town where you start out. The place scrolls along as you walk and the land is HUGE. I think in my boredom I found that it took close to an hour to walk from one side of the island to the other.

Order of the Stick forum? Cool! I've seen the avatar there as well (as in other forums), and I'm glad to see someone else who reads Rich Burlew's masterful comic! :D

The faery tale Adventure was superb! A nice map there as well..
you could battle a witch in a dark forest(needed sth. to survive its gaze) , challenge the dark knight in
the mountains , save a princess battle a sorceress on an island, which you could reach with a turtle on it's back of course! you could fly a swan that you had to catch first and visit all kinds of places:
swamps, deserts and the dragon cave . The void was also there and dungeons of course. The most effective weapon was the long sword, later on you could slay the enemies out of the screen, very difficult at first to kill anything. wraiths were cool monsters, and that's it from me...
