Emoticons - Spellicons

Post by ian_scho »

Just a random thought.

As a thickie I don't know my DES IR from my BEI RUIT and thought it would be great if I could use customised emoticons to show the spell symbols in the forum. For example (DES) (IR) would show the curly equals symbol and star.... I think. Anyway, you would see the symbols as you would see it in the game.

Dunno if it's possible in the forum engine, mind.
Also needs someone to DO the symbols as well, and make it fit in with the forum design. I'd have a go myself, but am sure somebody has them already.

Just a thought.

Not a bad idea, but the HTML generated would be around 40 times longer than just writing the syllables. I realise you don't remember the syllables, but I'm not keen on adding more stuff that'll slow down page load times....

will slow down page load times... this says everything. If that would slow down the page, I`m definitely against it. The page already runs slowly on my ancient machine (actually, 99% of internet sites runs slowly on my @#$%$#@ )

Well, *all* smiley's slow down page load times, so maybe I'm being a little unfair.... perhaps we should remove *all* smileys? ;)

If only there was some way to kinda-substitute them.

<< [] = <> )- /|
[+] :: ~ (okay I'm stuck with FUL) o_ (and ZO...)

Yeah, okay maybe it's a little more complicated than I expected...

If you really want them do a linked image from the encyclopaedia:

ImageImageImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImageImageImage
ImageImageImageImageImageImage

Hmm, a little small...

Yeah, and look at the code for that little lot:

Code: Select all

The code won't actually be so bad, because you'll be pulling from a local site, so the URL will be shorter, and i don't think the "border=0" is strictly necessary.

I'd be more concerned about the bandwidth involved in pulling the images themselves down, though they, too, are rather small.

Just my 2 cents (or 1.05 pence if you prefer), though.

Fair point but it still seems excessive to me.....

Ok, I see your point, too, and I am never one to embrace the cutting edge just for the sake of being out on the cutting edge, but, I think there has to be a time when we draw the line of what we're going to support. I mean, this site looks good and displays quickly on my 633mhz PIII, and that thing is 5 or 6 years old now. An eternity in computer time! How far back are we really wanting to go? This site looks awful at 640x480x256, but I don't think anyone cares, nor should we.

Can you use downloadable fonts? I made all the spell symbols into a font and I probably still have it. In fact, the font only contains spell symbols, so it's really small. Have a look if you like: DmRunes.ttf.

On second thought, the font tags would probably take up nearly as much text as the image tags.

Not to mention it'd look really weird for new users who didn't have the font. :)

(Unless we made it a dynamic font? I defer to those with more expertise in such things. It might be worse than images.)

Hehe, oh, and I just scrolled up and read my last post. In case anyone cares, I have a new(er...) computer now. ;)

And there's only 18 to remember anyway... (+6, but the power runes aren't really important. Does someone use anything but LO and MON in common speech anyway?)

Ya Vi Oh Ful Des Zo
Ven Ew Kath Ir Bro Gor
Ku Ros Dain Neta Ra Sar

Handy reminders to learn the runes:

Vi Altar
Ra Key
Gor Coin

Ven is rather VENomous looking rune
Oh - sounds like air
Bro - embracing arms, like BROther

CSB paths:
Ku - Sword of fighters
Ros - thief/ninja (extended hand stealing object)
Dain - raised staff of wizards
Neta - priestly cross

Spell mnemonics:
Zo Kath Ra - everyone knows it, it tells you two difficult rune symbols
Ful Ir - fireball
Des Ew - weaken nonmaterial
Gor is never used
