Best items?

Post by somemale »

Hi guys, long time lurker here, just registered today. I tried searching for the answer but couldn't find a definitive answer...

Just wondering what you guys think are the best weapon/armour/necklace/helmet/boots/sheild etc..

Been playing this game a long time and thinking of doing another Solo run this time (probably zed again), I want to equip him the best possible items.

What do you guys think are the best?

Welcme to the forums!

I think people have answers this question i nvarious threads, probably general 'what they like about the game' threads

Still ,sicne you've searched, can't co,plain abotu the topic coming up again!

Best weapon axe going to delta (unless you prefer jabbing with a rapier) going to inquisitor/hard cleave, best armour flamebane, best footwear elven boots until boots of speed, best neckwear - early levels the gem of ages for magic using, but by the time you get it you should be sufficiently advanteced. I usually prefer the illuminet until you can get the pendant feral. Oh, actually the jewel symal for anti-magic is a good one to have

Oh, and a vorpal blade is a must of course - saves magic and more importantly saves you messign aroudn with the materialisers in level 12

Otherwis,e a waterflask, a chest with some rat drunksticks, and just power on through

Keeping a horde of green boxes for the golems of level seven that are near doors I also find a timesaver.

For weight etc I wouldn't wear a helmet not other armour

The only staff/wand/magic item etc I would carry around would be the teowand for the spellchield/calm combination

Wouldn't wear a helmet? Well, maybe, but if you ever get conked on the head by a door it significantly reduces the damage you take.

Lol well, I suppose, but if you're still in the grey, it doesn't affect your speed at all does it? ;)

It's a bit pointless in DM, but the Crown of Nerra is awesome (+10 Wisdom). The Dexhelm is also great, though not available in DM... For a DM solo run, the helmet all in all indeed matters little, but an Armet should be ok with the weight.

Depends, you gain magic back faster with more wisdom, so good for otherwise terrible characters like halk if you aren't suiting and booting them with armour

I prefer the Crown over everything else Beo, but the sad fact is that in DM, you get it at the very end of the game (if at all). It's only useful against the Dragon and the Demons and Fire Elementals of Level 13...

I always had a soft spot for the Diamond Edge, but on my last play I went with the Inquisitor... and I think it may be better.

I've found that weps with the "Thrust" attack hit fast and hard - I use the Rapier, then upgrade to Delta Blade (and give the Rapier to my other char), and then the Inquisitor...although the only thing I really get to use that on is the Dragon.

For DM1/CSB (since they share similar items under diffrent names):

My favourite set always features:

for early game: Katana (Iadio) Rapier, Illuminet, Moonstone (From Chani)
For mid-game: Mithril Armor
for late game: Diamond Edge, Hard Cleave, Inquisitor, Pendant Feral, Boots of Speed, Crown of Nerra ( Wisdom is a must )

I'm not even counting things like Armour of Darc/Lyte, since they're essential

For DM2, the set is similar although you get all the items very early ( Axe farming )

Weapons: Excysmr, Blue Steele, Vorax
Armour: Tech and RA-SAR
Amulets: Suzerain ( +20 Mana!!! )

DM2 correction: two excsymyrs, preferably on the same character so you get that ginsu chef action going on; as many blue steeles as you want (meteor metal respawns); fire plate (female version — same rating, weighs half as much). And how on earth could you leave out the Numen staff??? +40 mana, triple fireballs, rechargeable.

I don't like to use Numen Staff as a weapon, but in a quiver... 40 mana is something I can't overlook.

Scarabs...what do they do, again? I can't remember since it's not an item I ever actually use. I can just remember that they're red and yellow lol.

Ah. I never bother with buffs either, lol. I can only really ever be arsed to cast Fireballs, Health Potions, and the occasional Vi Bro. Oh, and Zo, if it happens to be needed ;).
Think that's it anyway.

I remember back when there was no such site as this, we only guessed what most of the items do and there was no way to tell if item X has any special abilities... So we ran around in plate armor... Hell, I even was using the cursed crap in one of the games :D

Yes, that was definitely one of the strengths of DM - unless you could start crackign the code, you had no clue except by feel what half the stuff did - just as a 'real' adventure should be!

Infact, people ahve cracked the code and still aren't sure about some of the quirks. It's a great game!

still, if you are clever designer, you can build hunderds of hidden mechanisms. Especially DSAs are usefull for that!

Designer Specified Actuators - they exist in CSBwin, and allow you to programme in pseudo-code the behaviour of an actuator.

So for example, you can design somehtign that, when you push a switch, will make a teleporter invisible, create five gigglers around the party, throw a fireball into the party tile and also add ten apples onto their tile while sneaking all their shoes off.

They are supremely powerful and have been adapted to filters that also let you intercept and change dungeon behaviours - such as causing a monster attack or movement to alter, changing the properties of a party attack (on the fly depending on circumstances or weaposn if you like) or even changing the info of items when you view them. Etc etc

Play ConfluxIII for a few hours to see
some very well thought-out uses. For
example, spores that can be planted and
which sprout into full-grown creatures.

Rapier.
Saber.
Sword.

Strengths and usefulness, in your opinions?
I guess the 'jab' feature must be helpful, since it has been mentioned.
The rapier also has the benefit of weight (or a lack thereof).

Rapier is the best one there that I see. I usually Jab my way to Artisan Fighter and Punch my way to Artisan Ninja in the Screamer room on the Worm level before trekking on. Once you get one of the Vorpal Blades, the Rapier is rendered useless though.
As for the other two, I'd rate the Sword higher then the Saber. Chop is powerful in the right hands and doesn't take nearly as long to recover from as a melee does. Melee has next to no effect on a Rock Pile, so the Sword is even better still in that respect. I never found any circumstance where Slash or Parry were useful. Even Swing is useful for taking down a door. I guess the real question now is would I prefer a Saber or a Falchion. I'd prefer a Falchion over a Saber. Enough other weapons have the Melee option. I'd rather level up from scratch with a Falchion.
As for strength, I'd rate them Saber, Sword, Rapier, (Falchion). To me, the strength between a Saber and a Sword is negligible.

In normal DM, my favourite melée weps are those with the "Thrust" attack. I dunno if it's a property of RTC or whether it was this was in the original Atari version too, but Thrust attacks seem to do pretty high damage and have a fairly fast recovery rate. Therefore, the Inquisitor is my favourite (even though I don't get much chance to use it on anything except the Dragon), followed by the Delta Blade, then the Rapier. Things like Swords, Sabres, etc, I don't really use - I just stick with whatever I have till I find one of the aforementioned three favoured weps. If I'm just messing around with a stupidly high-powered (ie edited) character (usually back when I could be arsed to try and make dungeons, I'd playtest each bit as I made it), I'd give myself a Vorpal Blade so I could kill anything by hitting it.
