Pixel pushing or pixel art is simply a term used to describe low resolution graphics that were painted using a 1 pixel pencil tool. You literally place dots of colour on the canvas to build up the picture. Most early games used this style of 'painting': even now, GBA, NDS and the like have artists drawing in this way.
