Blasphemy! One of my favourite moments was falling down a pit on KU in CSB, long before I finished DM, and seeing something red on the left side of the screen. With anticipation, I turned around, ready to see some cool new monster. When I stared into the eyes of Mongor, I was shocked and didn't do anything for a few moments. Only after his 180 HP bite did I come back to life.

Long story short, the dragon will always be my favourite monster from DM - it is the biggest, toughest, and in my eyes, most beautiful creature of them all.

About the fireballs, yes, I still run into my own every now and then because I move too quickly. It isn't quite as bad in RTC, though, where projectiles seem to fly faster.

Me to. If it was possible to be caught into your own door-trap, I would be the first person to do so. If it was possible to fall off the stairs in DM, I wouldn't pass unharmed even to the 1st level. I can't remember how many times have I casted a fireball into a wall (or a door) right in front of me, how many times have I fallen into the SAME pit, how many times...

Thanks god there are no fireballs and so on in real life because I would be dead as soon as I leave my flat...

In DM, Does the dragon have more hit points than a stone man?
I just remember that most offensive spells effected T-Rex,
but the lightning spell was about the only thing that seemed to ruffle the stone man's feathers.

I'm sure glad DM didn't have any 'oops I broke my blade' possibilities.
That would have been a minor inconvenience.

Oh well, I now realize I could have 'ninja kicked' them. Talk about 'tough feet' boys and girls! Kicking and punching a truly ROCKY Bilboa type.

P.S. Thanks for sharing, Trantor. It pulled my mind back to about 1987.
(Good thing that didn't happen to you. You'd have disappeared!)

You can look up general monster stats on the Encyclopaedia (see quick links) or even look up individual monster stats in an editor.

Hello everyone !

I used to play with my younger brother. He was only watching because he was to afraid to play.

I think when we first got down the first stairs we were in the dark because we didn't know how to use the torch or the spells.

We did not see the mummy in the dark and when it attacked us with a AAAAAHHHHH I think we both jumped 10 cm from our chairs !!!

I don't know if there are many games with such a frightening atmosphere (when you are 8 of course)

Hehe, I distinctly remember diving behind the couch the first time a scorpion showed up. I was 8 or so too. :P

Welcome to the forums!

Coatyls (flying snakes) scared me for a very, very long time... them and scorpions! I think even when you get good at the game, you just remember how fast and nasty they are, and it affects your runs even when you can handle them combat wise :D

Hey, welcome to the forums, Lifepath :). I agree on Scorpions being scary - even now, I don't like any to manage to actually attack me - don't like the snarly noise they make, lol. The other noise is the Dragon/Giant Rat noise (which is mainly scary on the latter because the former makes the same sound).

I Agree - for me, the Scorpions are the most scary creatures I've ever seen in a computer game. I've finished DM for many times but I have to confess I still prefer avoiding them. I hate the scorpion generating section.

And the Oitus are pretty nasty. They scared me a lot when I was a child. They were in my dreams... I somehow linked them to Shelob from the Lord of the Rings... Yuck!

And I hate Gigglers!

You know, I almost completely forgot about Oitus. They just don't play a big part in the game, it seems. Plus you very rarely see them in any custom dungeons. Maybe one or two just to have them & that's it.

I can't help but notice the scorpion keeps getting brought up. They really that bad? Sure, they hit hard and they look awesome but definitely not creepy/scary. Then, I have a weird phobia of incorporeal things, so ghosts & materializers do it for me. Not so much on the zytazes & rives, though.

And just for the record, gigglers are annoying but never bothered me much until I played through Sophia's Surgical Strike. Now I'm terrified of them. Curse that GigaGiggler!

I think the first time i saw the red dragon sticks with me the most. I was a teenager when DM came out and suffered an almost terminal lack of patience, so naturally i raced through the game without really building up my characters. I remember getting a few fireballs in the face and scuttling away for a sleep before i managed to ignite the firestaff.

Aaahh.... Such memories.

I completed my first 'single character' game of DM a couple of days ago.
It seemed a shame to complete it. Bittersweet?

Now I'm considering a 'Tiggy Run' for old-times sake.

Hmmm. I may do a 'Wuuf Run' also.

I've started a solo run with Tiggy about two weeks ago, but abandoned it soon - after finishing the worms' level - it was surprisingly easy, I must say. Then I started playin Dark Reign. Maybe I'll get back to Tiggy later.
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

I did the 'Tiggy Run' and as Jan says... Easier than expected. I found the main problem to be item weight. Even with only chain armour, a couple of drumsticks and a waterskin, Tiggy couldn't carry more than two decent weapons. That said... i didn't spend any time levelling up, so strength was low throughout.

Strength potions! I did that at the and of your dungeon Sauman and carried about three sets of armour each champion! The packrat was satisfied ;D

Hello everyone - can I just say how thrilled I am? 2 and a half years later and my thread is still getting responses, I'm honoured, thank you all so much.

Even after all these years and my recent purchase of a PS3, I still hold Dungeon Master up as one of the best games I have ever played.

And for nostalgia's sake (and a great deal of self-indulgence), may I leave you with the words that defined gaming for me:

"The Keys to Passage Lie Hidden Deep"
"There's spiders in the boxes..."
"Stay out of my boxes!"

Level 4 is the most memorable for me. It was the worm infestation, myself and a friend went charging out and killed some worms but got badly wounded. Then we ran back into a safe room and closed the door. Of course it was not safe, and we just heard the lion-like roar of two worms behind us...I was around 11 and he was around 13 but we both just started screaming for several seconds (literally - his mum must have thought we were nuts)....we were paralysed with fear and could only watch as the worms ate us. Almost 20 years ago now but I still remember it clearly....what a game!

The riddle room...I had forgotten about that one. Time is of the essence, blue creatures chasing me...they were not strong but they were so fast that they scared the sh*t out of me!

Hello everyone,

it was quite a memorable moment when my champions met one of those "little Wizards" for the first time. His understanding of a "warm welcome" was a very special one...

The scorpions scared me very much. Over 100 hp damage are not very nice.

It was a very familiar feeling when the door of the dungeon opened again a few days ago. I played that fantastic game 20 years ago on my beloved AMIGA. My champions spent months in the dungeon to level up and solve every riddle. And it got even better and much harder with the sequel "Chaos strikes back". What a surprise to enter the starting room with all the worms hitting at the champions.

Kind regards from Germany,

Andi

A less fireball-like warm welcome in return!
