lewvel 4 sideways run

Post by pondpaul »

:( I loved this game when i had the Atari ST

I am on level 4 at the point when you push a button and then go sideways through the door when you then meet the magenta worms.
i could easily get through this door on the ST but even reducing my champions to a weight nil 0.0 ie not having anything I still cannot get through this door. so it looks like I am permanently stuck.

any clues or do I have to give up at this point?

It sounds like you are injured and haven't noticed - have you a red box around any of your body parts?

Try a healing potion and go again.

Or has someone's stamina dropped very low?

Make sure everyone's in the grey, weight-wise, if you haven't already. Also, if you're not already doing so, try using hte mouse to push the button and the keyboard to sidestep through the door. You'll most likely get a bit of a bonk on the head but should make it through no problem.

I am having the same prblm. You said you used the 3 key? whats that mean? when I hit three on my keypad it goes to my third party member. I cant figure out how to sidestep!

If you're using RTC, by default the bottom six keys of your numpad map to the six directional arrows on the screen. If you're using CSBWin I think it's the top six keys (from what I remember of ages ago when I had a few goes at Conflux II). If those don't work and you're still not sure, have a look in the Config file or something - with RTC there is a list of the mapped keys in that file.

Im using a laptop so I only have top number keys. I dont know anythng about the config file, I tried to go into it and change it so I could side step right using R on my keyboard, that dosnt chnge anythng in the game. I tried to bring up the cnfg file in the editor and a huge list of errors and warnings came up and I wasnt able to get into the editor. this is really frustrating! any suggestions?

If you are using RTC on a laptop without a num pad, as Ameena said you can remap the keys easily in the config file

There is a way to do it in CSBwin too using the config file, but you need to figure out the scan code of the keys you want

can you rephrase that in laymans terms, I dont know very much. how do I figure out scan codes, and when I do what do I do with that information, just open the config file, add it and save?

You do not need scan codes for RTC, it's easy :)

Open up the config.txt file in the main RTC directory with any text editor. Scroll down a little, and you should see a block of text surrounded in ; telling you all the acceptable phrases for all the keys

Move on down until you find:

KEY_STEP_LEFT NUMPAD1
KEY_STEP_RIGHT NUMPAD3

Note that the phrases are separated by a tab not jsut spaces

All you need to do is insert whatever key you would like in place of the movement. I personally would remap all six movement keys to something like A S D Z X C where Z and C and the sidesteps, but it is up to you!

As far as I remember, at least in the original DM and in CSBWin, you should be able to squeeze through the door only using your mouse (the closing door bumping into your head, obviously), if you're VERY VERY fast (in moving the cursor from the switch to the right-side-step button) - it just needs some training...

By the way - I bought an external numeric keyboard for my laptop (it says "Roline" on it) - not for playing DM originally, but because of my work (building databases), but it helps me a lot in DM, it's very comfortable. And it was not so expensive (about 10 EUR or so), and it has two additional USB ports on it!
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!
