There are some toggling pits, if you failed at any point in the sequence or explored it before, it does not fully reset.

Try variants of this, if a pit is blocking you walk back and forwards again and it usually sorts itself out. If you really get trapped surrounded by pits, drop down the pit, heal, and come back - I believe that action usually means the pits will act in a better manner when you go back in to the room

I can usually do the first crossing of that room fine - getting from the entrance to the back-right corner, but I always seem to end up running around for ages trying to get across from the first corner to the second because the list of directions in my guide is wrong. Well, either that's wrong or this pit setup isn't quite the same as in the Atari - I can't remember whether we used to have the same problem way back then ;). I think I usually do bother trying to get across there just to kill a few more Snakes and stuff, but sometimes I can't be arsed with half the level. Well, it's not like you have to do it...but then, Level 6 is a pain because of one particular species (won't mention here in case you've not played it before, Pond ;)).

May advice would be - forget about a list of directions and solve it *in situ*! It's actually not as hard as it looks (although I sometimes end up running for a few minutes around frantically, falling into a pit from time to time...).
The basic rule is that if you step on a square and it opens a pits, steping back on it closes the same pit.
The more you move around the more mess you make. Sometimes, it's better to fall into a pit voluntarily and start once again (or restore your game).
I agree with Ameena that it's much easier to get to the back-right corner from the door than to the back-left corner from the right one.

Good luck!

I beleive the other thing to do is you need to get to the lright hand side first - and hug the wall. One of the switches on the right hand side opens up a blocking pit on the left hand side if I recall correctly

Are we talking about the same "right hand side", Beo? I mean the small chamber with a shield, torch and a swamp slime? I don't recall any switches there. :?

I always did (seen from the entrance point ) the right side first. Annoying couatls are there, so have a fball ready(or two).
I think you have to get right as far as possible and switch to the middle...then back again
been too long , cannot remember.. could be that it is easier to get to the left hand side first, but I always got to the right side first..

Jan: I meant floor switch (I think the one right infront of the room opens the other pit, and one near the door closes it or something), and yes, the small area with the sheld and torch
