Hey, welcome to the forum :). I vaguely remember we had a hint disk for CSB (possibly might have been DM but pretty sure it was CSB...). We'll still have it, therefore, in one of the disk boxes here in my room...maybe I should check. When it's not 11:35pm and I'm trying to check the forums and stuff before sodding off to bed ;).

Hey, Beowuuf.
Thanks for the kind words.
I was able to get a copy of the files that ran on the Atari ST. I'm not into emulators, so I've not been able to make it work.
I'd gladly offer it to the Christophe for the DM Encyclopaedia and anyone who'd like to have it.

I'll attempt to contact him and see what he says.

I love the group approach. I'm terrible at puzzles (I'm a mapper), and definitely need the help.
I love the custom dungeons available, but am having a terrible time playing them. LOL

Anyway, thanks for the kind words.

I'll take a look are reactor in terms of mapping.

Hi Ameena,
Yes, I also did CSB as a hint disk. Let me know if you ever find it. I only have the files for DM on the ST.
I also did hint disks for the King's Quest series and offered them for the ST, Amiga and PC.

Thank you for the "welcome". :D

Hello Rover! Welcome! :D

Yeah, social gaming! It was a necessity here in the Eastern Block in the 1980s, because only a few kids had a computer in my town. So there were normally 10 or even more people crowded around one old 800XL, or 1040ST or A500 later, watching other 2 or 3 guys playing something.

DM was a bit complicated for social gaming, wasn't it? One guy was "walking" and another one doing things with the mouse. But because of the tile/square movement, the guy with the mouse had often absolutely no idea where were they going... oh, the memories. :)

As a (wannabe) geographer, I'd be particularly interested in the maps you made. :P
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

Ahh, I think it was the CSB Utility Disk I was thinking of - just had a look through the disk box and found that, as well as a couple of disks labelled by my dad as "CSB Maps and Info".

Once upon a time I got a real computer, an Atari 512 STe. Then came THE Game.
I've played it with my sister for hours, days, nights. And we achieve to be high level masters in all, even the first to be thought as tiny Gothmog became a great close combat fighter. The team was Hissssa, Gothmog, WuTse and Wuuf. Oh Lord, this is so far but so real...
Then time passes, seven years and seven more they were rolling on. I sold my Atari (I know this is just hardware but...) and it did hurt some, like it did for my big boy toy's MX-5. Only for those two, less for my RX-7 but maybe it's because I'm almots a vintage player now. Funny that guy at the customer last time recognize my phone ringtone, the original Bubble Bobble main music... and then a shared "secret old rites" story came to us, like a golden age lost for ever. Solomon's Key, Xenon II Megablast... Dungeon Master.

Now I'm married, I happen to own a DreamCast, played some buy annoyed me fast even if girls in DOA were lovely. My wife is more real. So just get now and then faster Macintosh and never (my soul is saved) a Windows computer. And I did try DM II but it was quite complicated and life got me away from having time for it. The only game wich bring me some thrill has been NeverWinter Nights on my Mac and Some Resident Evil but never as much as DM did.

I'm owner of my own house now, 1885 was it's year of rise. I'm living in France, in the Loire Valley. Castles everywhere! And when I happened to visit the crypt of the old church here the teenage priest said that a wall with a very nice and old painting was the eternal door of what may lie behind, should be a very important grave and stuff around. I just wanted to cast the spell to see behind...!! Yes it's a bit off topic. So and for now? Well, I still own one disk that I just can't throw away. I also keep two pages of ST Magazine from the eighties, maps. For years a disk is still alive, a real Dungeon Master disc. I can't tell you why I do and must keep it. You all know why. It has a kind of power within. And I feel it as a "key", like "one day the world will be saved by this disk".

It's late and I've just found a dusty floppy disk reader and decided to check this disk. The Mac said "this disk can't be read"... ok it's not the time but I was curious to see if I was the last awaken player of the Dungeon... and found you, games for newer computers... it's time to take the sword again! WAAAARRRR CRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!!!

Edit: before I read these online infos I even forget the name of Chaos Strikes Back! OMG, I may be confused but this was the one with "changing" rooms making maps almost impossible? If I remeber well I got parts of a green armor... and I also just think the save of my team is lost for ever! That's no good. Maybe I'll start a new one with my son ;) Let me discover the avalaible games and if of any use scan the french maps published.

Edit 2: well the clone of CSB does not want to launch and DMII wants classic... I just hope I can cope with these computer concern asap... before I hide my floppy disc for the next 15 years!

that's weird, but your story about casting a spell on a wall just reminded me summer 2006, when i visited Le Clos Lucé in Amboise. There were those stairs, and that corridor with stones and that portcullis...

hey guys, how about a DM weekend in the Chateaux de la Loire, let's say, in the next 2 years ? oh come on ! haven't you said this summer ??

oh, et bienvenue chez nous Malef :)

Woohoo, another DM-head joins our ranks :D. It's great hearing all these stories from people of how they played DM so long ago and have now found it again and still think it's just the best game ever...I want to show it to all the people I've been trying to persuade to start it and go "See? See? Look how many people are still in love with it after nearly 22 years!" :D.

Hello, Malef, and welcome! :D

Nice story. I also have a tendency sometimes to cast a x325 spell in front of a door or a wall... (and I also sometimes bump with my head into it :) ).

I'm interested if you son enjoys DM as well.

Thanks fellows ;)
My nickname " Malefoda " was not allowed, don't know why... keep it short then.
And yes there are sooo many secret places here with Dungeon ( from french "donjon" ?).
At my mother's familly the old castle is said to have lost over ages "oubliettes" ( kind of trap that makes you fall in a remote, deep and dealdy well) with gold and other good things... guys it's time ;) For my french fella the closed wall of a great hero is in the catacomb of the church of the castle of Saint Aignan sur Cher.
Right now I can't manage to run any DM on my Apple computer. Will try again! Not too much, hit the wall does hurt ;)

Welcome to the forums Malef!

I too keep an old Amiga disk, with original if battered packaging, in a drawer in my mother's house, saved game disks that can't be read anymore sitting by it's side, a copy of the disk taken for safety that thanks to copy protection never worked!

Hmm, I think CSBwin can be read by a mac, you just need the correct version -
http://dmweb.free.fr/files/Clone-CSBwin ... Master.tgz
http://dmweb.free.fr/files/Clone-CSBwin ... esBack.rar

It is not the latest version of CSBwin, but hopefully it is not too far removed. Certainly it should play perfectly the initial dungeons - CSBwin has been fine in that regard for a while. Not sure about some of the newer customs such as Conflux III though.

Again - welcome!

Dungeon Etymology:

"The word dungeon is based on Old French donjon, which is derived from Latin dom(i)niōn- "property" (and ultimately dominus "lord"). However, in French the term donjon refers to a "keep" (a type of tower), and the term oubliette or cachot (a type of prison) is a more appropriate translation of English "dungeon". Donjon is therefore a false friend."

it may be interesting to also note that even in japanese it is Don-jon by the sound of the characters.. we when ever you try to translate a DM page in Japanese it'll always come up Don Jon. :)

And therefore "Dungeon Keeper" is actually "A keeper of a keep"! :P

Dungeon Master, the good old days on the Atari ST. I use to play it with my Brother (twin), I'd do the keyboard movement and he'd use the mouse. We played the game so much that we wore out the disk, and when we finally won, the replacement disk didn't have the the end sequence. So it wasn't until it came out on emulator that I actually saw the ending, it did help fill in some of the pieces. I enjoyed DMII, the shops and outside environment were cool. Played CSB, Captive, and Bloodwych but not to the same extent.

I'm currently teaching English in Brunei (the country), away from my home country New Zealand, but gives great travel opportunities. Married, first child on the way.

I like putting together dungeon ideas, started with DM Java, but currently trying RTC as it gives alternative wallsets on the same level (like DMII). I'm just getting started on this, so nothing will be finished too soon.

Thinking about it, me neither! Time to check it out in the Encyclopedia... Done, thanks Christophe!

My spies tell me that DMII is actually many more different levels than we realise. Anyways, building can be as much fun as playing. Try trawling through a few custom dungeons along the way. :)

I was handed the DM game disks when I was in my early 30's.
Atari ST (520 at that time, swapped and upgraded to a 1040).
I still remember finally getting the colored monitor. That was a great day.

Anyway, back to you. Thanks for the information about your DM experience.

Re: So, tell us about yourself...

Post by tzoneman »

Well hello! To preface my first post here, I would like to just say "WOW!" I am completely blown away that the good old Dungeon Master game has a fan following! This is awesome!

My name is Stewart, but in the cyberworld I'm known as tzoneman (creator of The Twilight Zone Archives - a non-profit organization that promotes the work of Rod Serling). I am currently 46 years old (47 in a 6 weeks or so), and was lucky enough to be around when the very first Dungeon Master game was released; let's see, I had/have an Amiga (it's packed away in a box somewhere) and played the game back in 1987/87 (whenever it came out for the Amiga).

At the first moments of entering that very first dungeon entrance, I was COMPLETELY blown away... for even though I was somewhat new to the Amiga, this was THE first time that a type of game was 3D (for it's time), and allowed the user/player to walk through areas and pick up and act upon and in the surroundings. Yeah, sure, a couple years later, Eye of the Beholder came out, and took off from there with a fuller RPG elements with NPC's and such, and then Ultima Underworld came out, and then Stonekeep, and today, we're totally spoiled by The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (I clocked in at 345 hours game play with the expansion pack, and the Fallout 3) but eh... whatever... DUNGEON MASTER always will stand out, for me, and for most likely all of you, as the predecessor of all that followed.

I played the heck out of Dungeon Master, to say the least. Drawing out maps on graph paper (I still have them in a file somewhere), playing the game while my friend was also playing it on his. We'd call each other sometimes at night, talking about where we were stuck, and such, joking about how fun the game was, about how we dug luring creatures under a door and then closing it... up and down it would keep going, until the creature was killed. Man, that first mummy that came out of the darkness, almost make me scream like a wee wittle girl - all of these memories are fresh in my mind... being able to name your characters, that one level that contained the Screamers that would keep appearing, me and my friend Scott called that room The Grocery Store. DM was so unique, no other game put you IN it as well as DM did. Just the first time I opened a door, or threw an object down the hall... awesome! Again, the mummies were scary... I'm trying to remember all the monsters, but it's a little difficult, I've played so many games since then. I do remember the dude that would steal your stuff, pesky bastard, and the great big dragon... mixing games, as I also have memories of digging the Eye of the Beholder games, those were pretty awesome and took it a step further... but DM, ah... so much fun!!! I think because it was THE FIRST game of it's kind, it just holds a special place for me, and obviously other gamers as well.

What a great game, what great memories. I remember seeing the game box for the first time on the shelf (still have it... yeah, you guessed it, packed in a box somewhere), the purple box, the images on the back of the 3D-like dungeon... and getting it home and starting it up... first learning how to use the rune-stones to make magic commands... very cool. The lighting was cool, creating light, creating fireballs - I always hated those poisonous worms... man, they were pesky bastards weren't they? It was quite an addictive game.

I don't remember if I ever finished Chaos Strikes Back, I don't think I did. I found the beginning a bummer because it put you right smack in the middle of a bunch of the frickin' worms... UGH! That was frustrating. But I played the game and dug it just the same, although, I just don't remember it as well as the first. I played Dungeon Master II, and found it to be nostalgic. I could never figure out why someone hasn't made a new game of the DM universe, something with the gameplay of Oblivion. I never heard of the other two incarnations after Chaos, and I guess I should read more about them and the downloads before asking this, but, can I actually download all of these games and play them in Windows XP? Man, that would be cool.

Anywhom, I look forward to checking this forum and thank you good folks for keeping the torchlights burning. It's hard to believe that Dungeon Master was first released over 20 years ago, and people still dig it. Oh, I work in the gaming industry for a few years (long boring story why I'm not working in it now...:(, and working with a gal who wrote manuals, whose name was Marisa. She worked on Dungeon Master, and, in some special version for those who worked at FTL, they included her (and maybe other employees) in the Hall of Champions... I thought that was pretty cool.

hope to talk more later AND to download the games (got to read about that - hope they work on Windows XP).
thanks,
tzoneman

Welcome, Tzoneman! Nice story, nice memories! :D

You can play DM in various forms - the original DM for PC, the Chaos Strikes Back for Windows (CSBWin), the Return to Chaos (RTC), etc. - RTC seems to be most progressive and most of the new "custom dungeons" by fans are made for it, so it's probably the best option to download this one (http://ragingmole.com/RTC/), although I somehow prefer the CSBWin (see the post by ian_scho above). All the information is on Dungeon Master Encyclopaedia (http://dmweb.free.fr/), where you can find links to download these versions too.

Eye of the Beholder III was the first one I played, as I recall. I later found the first two, but I seem to recall they were quite a bit different, so I quickly lost interest in them.

I also played DM when it first came out. My youngest (10 years old) just got back into DM again.
I'm looking forward to seeing him reach the 'spider regen' area, as well as a few other places.

Woo, another new member...we seem to be getting quite a few of those lately. It's gerat to hear all these little anecdotes and things about how scary the mobs were etc so many years ago. It just shows how all the fancy scenery and imagery of today's games just can't match up to the old grey world of Dungeon Master :D.

Thanks for your good welcome. Again, this is so cool that people still have an interest in DM.

Ok, so last night I downloaded RTC, and was playing DM and CSB for a bit; just seeing the opening screen (somewhat altered in place of the FTL) made me smile, and opening the first door and choosing my characters was such great - jeez, even after all these years, I remembered most of those portraits to chose from, although it WAS a task finding my original party (also, not sure why I thought you could name them... was that Eye of the Beholder where you could name your characters...?)

After I chose my party, and was sitting there like a silly goober savoring the chance to check out DM once again, I enter the dungeon and started moving around... made light without even having to read the scroll, not sure how I remembered that... started even remembering the first level, crazy. Killed the first mummy, was laughing... killed some screamers, but let them attack me a little because I always loved that sound they made and their simple animation that so totally worked... played for a bit longer, then loaded CST, got some characters, started into the dungeon, and once again, faced that first horde of worms that I always hated... those pesky little bastards were still hanging around after 20 years, just waiting to poison me... couldn't remember the rune for a poison removing potion, totally died ;)

Then, said, "Well, it's just after midnight, I should probably crash. Dang, this brings back some good memories..."
Went off to bed.

You guessed it... couldn't sleep... visions of poisonous worms and mummies were filling my consciousness and I had total insomnia over it... sooooo, got up at 1am and played til 3am. HA!
So very cool.

I'll have to email my old friend Scott and tell him all about this - about DM on Windows and this forum and the life that DM still has... of course he plays WOW, so, there may be no getting through to him ;)

if you play the RTC version of DM you are forced into character knowledge for spells as you can only cast the runes you have read. So it's more important to find the scrolls in this case in order to college magic runes and cast them into the book. It was a way to keep the experts honest.. since many of us know all the spells by heart and are too easily tempted to use them when we start. ;)

Though, sounds as if you have trouble remembering them anyway ;)
