For those wanting to listen to Amberstar / Ambermoon soundtracks, I looked into MP3ing those, but they are huge and complicated and since I don't know the original tunes, I don't know where the loop marks are for some of the incidental stuff.

You'd be better off downloading the original MODs and listening to them that way. You can get them from Unexoitca, and I suggest a good player to use is XMPlay, (which must include the Zip and Delix plugins).

Since all the archives on Unexotica are in LHA format, you'll need a zip program that can handle that, but most of them should no problem.

EDIT: I just tried Amberstar in XMPlay and it doesn't work. Might need extra plugins. Ambermoon plays fine though.

I have some of them on the PPC now and it's a joy to have them with me all the time.
(I could add some about the infamous YM2149 here, which was responsible for destroying all that was left of my taste for music... but I won't)

This also triggered a search for a SID player for the PPC. In conjuration with Stone Oakvalley's Authentic SID Collection (SOASC= http://www.6581-8580.com/ ), one can have 35000 pieces of classic C64 music all jammed into a pocket. It's just amazing.

'Shadow Of The Beast' on the Amiga 500 had the best musical score, ahead of its time i believe.
I also remember playing Persian Gulf Inferno on my Amiga 500, pretty amusing intro/music.. Another side scroller game, but getting your hands on that shotgun and wiping some terrorists after searching endlessy on different levels of the ship was very rewarding lol. Anybody else remember Yaffah-Kee!! (hope thats how it's spelled) lol.

I think most of this is from before my time, but I can remember what Bloody Tears sounds like. I really liked that song a lot. There's precious few video game pieces of music that are etched into my memory, but that is one of them.

Also, it's not exactly as old as everything else mentioned here; but my favorite piece of video game music that I can remember was the Overworld Theme (Terra's theme) from Final Fantasy 6. Or Final Fantasy 3 as it is over here in the states. Beautiful song, enough so that I doubt I'll ever forget the sound of it.

Sealtiel, I absolutely agree with you. Of all the great Final Fantasy themes, Terra's theme is, in my mind, the strongest one of them all. It's one of the very best tunes I've ever heard in any video game.

As for old games, I prefer the music from the Ys series. As for not so old games, I prefer the music in Blood. No other game I played had music that matched its atmosphere like Blood did.

Ooooh Captain Blood - just listened to that one, yaaay I remember that tune . I'll have to listen to the others now just to see if I like any of them. Maybe then I can yoink and surf some of them (in Audiosurf - omg fantastic game, the tagline "Ride your music" is a pretty much complete description of the game and it's bloody worth the fiver it costs to buy it ).

Don't think I ever got very far with Captain Blood - met a few aliens and stuff, and sometimes got a way along it (no idea how far though). It was interesting that you had a different start point each time - the first planet could have one of several different species on it.
Commander Blood (later, on the PC) was a nice bit of fun - finished that one definitely .

Yeah, I was a big Jarre fan back in the day and loved Ethnicolor. I had forgotten how awful the "cut and paste" job was on captain Blood! REally rather funny to hear it again.

Yes, I do. It's an A1200 with 50 mhz 68030, 16 mb extra ram, 40gig hd and a 52x32x52x speed CD rewriter.

You mean you're still using it sometimes? Even more cool!

Of course I use it I use it for assembler programming and some games like Dunegon Master (hd patch, I hate floppies). Great machine, and it was my only machine until I was given a few old PCs in 2005.

I checked out that link, nice old game music, it really brings me back to the games I used to play on my old Amiga back in the 90's. Didn't recognize any of the tunes specifically, but the general style of some of them was familiar.

One more thing, I've noticed lately, Gambit, that you seem to have developed a habit of resurrecting old threads. Kinda reminds of a member of another forum I used to be active in that had a similar habit.

That other forum was one where some of the regulars would get rather anal about anyone resurrecting old threads, preferring a new thread instead. Actually the main reason for that forum being formed was a freeware music business sim, the fact that this thread was an oldie about music and was resurrected 3 years after it's last post just reminded me of that forum, which was the first forum I ever joined too.
