Compatibility between versions to save data

Messages are moved here (should anyone ever want to see them again) once they are no longer applicable to the current version (e.g. suggestions that have been implemented or bugs that have been fixed).

Compatibility between versions to save data

Post by pamchos Ito »

Hello,
In the future, does George have the schedule which gives the compatibility between versions to save data?

I cannot use the data trained for several days by 0.14.
I take out a nosebleed out of disappointment. :(

Unfortunatly the nature of most bugs is that they are in the dungeon files (the save files) themselves, and so to fix it the save files must change. I also think alot of the time the main engine changes in someway that also expects the save game to be changed, hence the worst incompatibilities.

It is my understanding however that you can still take that party you have been working on in v.14 and put them into v.15. You still have to go through all the dungeon again though.

There's also the question of limited resources. I've only really got time for about an hour or two's worth of work on RTC a week - I could either spend that time making versions backwards compatible, or spend it making the next version better...

As advance warning I've already had to make some big changes to the underlying format for the next version (codename V0.16 - catchy eh - shhh, don't tell anyone ;-) so the versions won't be backwards compatible...

On the plus side though, the changes allow you to create your own new graphics (not just over-rides) and add some new features needed for CSB...

An hour or two?

George, you really need to get yourself fired so that you can concentrate on much more important issues than life or job!

Yummy...

Cool, really looking forward to v0.16 then if it will allow new items and such like.

Incidentally, is it (or will it be possible) to have completely separate images for different items which currently share the same graphic? For example, all swords look the same in the dungeon view but obviously are very different. It would be nice for each of these to have a dungeon view that reflects their true appearance. Will this now be possible?

No it isn't by replacing graphics (if you replace the sword graphic, then all objects that use it will be effected).

It would only be possible if you could modify objects themselves...and therefore not for now; that's alot of work :-(
