I found also following:
On the floor under the Hall of the Champions, there is blue haze with nearby writing on the wall "Leave valuable on the floor...". I left valuable on the floor and pit has closed. I reached end of the corridor in I picked up all items which was there and pit reopenned. I stayed right next to the pit (so pressure plate which operates pit was in front of me) and I threw dagger. AND!
Pit clossed (in other words: pressure plate was activated) just by the flying item. It should be activated only with dropped item I think.

Re: Pressure pads
Other pads also show this behaviour. The first pad in the hall of champions is activated simply by an object being thrown over it, before it lands on the floor. And in DM, that particular pad is only activated by the party and not objects, so RTC has this wrong on 2 counts.
