v0.08 difficulty, numpad, food...

Post by Will »

Hi all,

I tried the game yesterday and it's really great. I have a few comments, some of them I've already seen here (but I'll try to give a "fresh" point of view) and others I've not seen yet.

- numpad: I can move around using the numpad, but it doesn't behave at all like on my atari. Here the keys 1 to 6 are used, and 7-9 are unused. Would it be possible to map it to keys 4-9 instead, or even better, like this: 7 (1/4 turn left), 8 (forward), 9 (1/4 turn right), 4 (left), 6 (right) and 2 (back)?

- food: the comsumption of food is too fast. I don't know by how much, but it's too fast.

- throwing clubs: when I throw a club I can usually kill a mummy or a trollin in one shot (with Wuuf, apprentice ninja, not very strong). I didn't remember that. Looks like a thrown club deals a bit too much damage?

- difficulty: either I'm very good right now after having played the game for the last time some 10 years ago (almost) but I got at the end of level 2 without any problems at all, even when running into monsters with my 2 unmarmed wizards (say, Gothmog and Wuuf, not the most impressive hand-to-hand fighters! :)

- door: I bang my head against the door when it is only 1/4 closed, and it prevents me from moving forward... this is a major issue.

I think that's all at the moment.

Thanks for bringing this great game back to life!

I actually played for a bit longer than all previous tries and got to choose your door choose your fate..

After completing it there are a few things I noticed that are mentioned above..

Throwing of clubs and other things. At the first Ninja level I jumped from lobing the club two squares to throwing with such skill it went about 6 squares.. I think the lobing thing should steadily grow outwards turning to skill occasionaly fumpling as you would on a spell that you aren't yet too good with. Also the amount of damage done from a simple thrown object is amazing. I stood toe to toe with a blue meany and delivered about 8-10 slashes from Darroo's Saber and Nabi's Falchion sent bout the same.. it died.. but had done conciderable damage to them both. the next one I came up to I threw the club at it and it died.. a few more I came accross took between 1-2 thrown clubs to kill.. poof. Too easy. Something there just isn't right.

The Des Ven spell just works too well one shot cleared two blue meanies and one mummy in one shot.. Lo powered even! Just not right. It should only effect the monster hit and shouldn't be THAT effective.

Food and water DOES still go too quickly but is pretty close. it's maybe *about* 2/3rds-3/4ths the time it should take to deplete (sp?) That just a rough estimate. The thing here is that as it is I think it's pretty challenging at it's current rate but I forsee much death in the purple worm section at it's current rate.
I would raise it a little.. not too much as it's pretty close already but knock it up a smidge.

The last thing is that the Ninja levels seem to come too fast. the first and second are ok but the next and the next should come further and further.. I gained them after 15-20 tosses of a club each up to journeyman. I stopped gaining them by choice after then and moved on.. there are other skills such as hand to hand fighting and rope climbing which should be required to gain further levels. you shouldn't be able to become a master from just throwing stuff (but that is more of a sudgestion) either way.. they still seem to come for the higher levels.
