Something still annoys me with monster AI:
If your party is for example southwest of a pain rat and the rat is already facing south, it will usually first turn west, move and turn south before attacking instead of moving south, turning and attacking.
Also, if you keep walking around monsters beside a wall to harass their backs, they will often face the wall while trying to turn 180 degree and present their backs to the party.
Also, many monsters take a awful lot of time between turning/moving, like for example pain rats, which are just to slow to be a menace to any party. Monsters like gigglers or munchers of course are fast enough.
It would be good, if the turning movement to face the party could be made faster after a move that gets a monster to a tile adjacent to the party. Of course, giving at least some monsters, like scorpions, the possibility to sidestep would solve that problem also (and would add to the threat they pose).
Another thing is, that monsters should be able to step back, if for example caught under a closing door, like the party would, instead of turning before leaving.
If some monsters, like vexirks for example, could be sly enough so they do not always immediately attack the party but resort to other tactical maneuvers like waiting behind a corner so they can't get shot from afar battles could start to become interesting.

Re: Monster AI
I agree with the turning under doors, I think it still needs to be changed...creatures in DM could do a backwards turn, whereas now you can wait for them to turn, stop the dorr so they start turning, start the door again, wait for them to turn...

Re: Monster AI
I'd prefer a backward step before a backward turn.

Re: Monster AI
It look more natural than the creature jumping backwards...they turned to the left/right and appeared on the next tile, so it looked like a single movement out of the door - just a personal opinon
Now that monsters can move 1/2 tile steps, harder to do i guess!

Re: Monster AI
I think jumping backward is quite natural a movement if you are getting crushed under a door and an armed opponent holds the other side of the door.
