Definative guide update and questions

Post by Me »

Hi, was just wondering what's the current status on the definitive guide for editing. I always have trouble finding the link to the webpage in these forums; could a link to the latest version be posted here?
As well, I believe someone had posted a complete object guide a while back... Could that link be posted under here too?

And finally, I would like to help in the process of building an editor or compiling information for the complete editing guide. I have about two months before I have to start my last year of undergrad at university. I've had a lot of experience making websites, but little experience with programming. Please contact me if you think I might be of some use. I'd really like to give something to the community who shares my love of this simple game. My big hope is that a really good editor will be created, and then more of you will start pumping out new dungeons that I can play during study breaks at univesity.
So again, let me know who needs some help. The greatest resource I have right now is free time!

cheers

PS:
The only thing I don't completely understand in the functioning of RTC dungeons are relays... Can someone also kindly give me a quick run down on their purpase and function? Thanks

Hello *Waves*
The editing link will be on a sticky post a the start of the forum. Andyboy hasn't posted i na while but what he has there so far is good. That post had the complete object list too, if i remember right.

Gambit or George can answer the relay question better

Well, last night I had another go at straight text editing for a new dungeon idea I had... took me 3 hrs just to code properly for a very simple 8x8 room with items and monsters.
RTC must have a proper editor created - There is just no other painless way to make a dungeon. I had the idea of just creating a simple dialog box that ouputs the proper text with proper syntax. All that the user is required to do is enter the coordinates of items and specify their function and properties. Of course, this requires that the dungeon be completely planned out on paper ahead of time, and each item still needs to addressed individually... and cutting and pasting still takes while.
So basically, all I'm saying is that a GUI type editor (like DMUTE, but more flexible) is the only way to go. I'm prepared to learn any programming language to get the job done.
Andyboy, I'm really glad you're already working on this. I took your advice and downloaded the blitzplus demo and had a look at the tutorials. I would be willing to dive into this further if you think I might be of some use to you for simple coding. Or, I would be equally willing to work on the definative guide.
I'm just so damn eager to see new dungeons for RTC!
:D

Its in the pipeline, and I am still working on it :)

Ive just had Sooo much on at work and home (look, its midnight now and Ive only just got round to checking in here). Sorry its taking so long, I had hoped to have enough time before some of the other projects that were coming up started, but alas I didnt.

Don't give up. It's appreciated like the work many others are doing here and as long as this community is still active (and it seems alive allright) there's no hurry. This is after all, your free time.

Thanks PITD, I havent given up on it by a long shot. I will continue and I have another reason to write it as well, I want to write a dungeon of my own for you lot to have a go at.

It is in a stable state, and dugneon layout is done and dusted, it is now a case of item and dungeon feature placement and their properties (although that is the difficult bit - lol). I have a good idea of how it is going to do things :)

Later all,
Andy

Looking forward to it - but don't overdo it. I abandoned chiefy's dungeon after a few tries because I'm not a masochist and think he just overperformed there. Difficult does not mean heave monster's on 'em ;o)

Oh it will probably only be a small dungeon (5 levels or so) but they will be challenging :) I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve that I hope I will be able to exploit more easily with the editor.

Also I want to test the "decorate dungeon" function that puts slime and things on the floors :)

Now that IS a good idea.. Recordings of peoples treks through a dungeon, so that they can send to teh author and see how people got around things, or how hard they found it. :)

As for the definitive guide, if anyone wishes to contribute to it, either drop me a PM with you're additions or post it on the definitive guide thread that is in this forum

http://www.dungeon-master.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=108
(incidentally - my first post on this forum :) >O< Time Tunnel )

and I will add it to the document.

I need to check over the guide again to do parts of the editor.

Here are the links to the guide and object list (thanks beowuuf)
