...is the source code for DM available somewhere?

I would also consider making a winter-project for writing my own version of DM for Windows.

Any thoughts/ direction?

That's exactly what I'm doing. It's taken me much longer than a winter though. There's much more to do too! I'm making it 3D so it's a bit more complex.
