The Making of... Dungeon Master

Post by Steve B »

If you live in the UK you can buy a magazine called RETRO which is a one-off special from the team behind the UK's best games magazine called EDGE. In it they have reviewed a selection of 8 classic games from the last 20 years. They're not reviewed in a Retro way looking back but as though they were reviewing the games for the very first time. Why am I telling you all this? Well if you turn to page 102 there is a 2 page review of Dungeon Master which is really fantastic. It's very well written and it gets an excellent score which I won't reveal. I'll leave you to read the review. Well worth £5.00 :)

While I'm on the subject of EDGE magazine I'll tell you about another DM feature they did a while back. Every month they do a "Making of..." feature where they get the original developers to describe how they created the game, what inspired them and what poblems they came up against. If like me you're lucky enough to own EDGE issue 106 (January 2002) you'll find an awesome 4 page "The Making of... Dungeon Master". It's a fascinating article which every DM fan should read. I've just checked and they do still have back-issues of that particular copy of EDGE. If you're interested in seeing the review e-mail EDGE here: backissues@futurenet.co.uk

Could you scan both of these articles and send them to me by email?
That would be very nice as I don't live in UK and I'd really want to see them!
Thanks.

BTW, what are the other 7 classic games reviewed?

Unfortuantely I don't have a scanner which is one of the reasons I posted this here. I'm also hoping someone can scan the reviews in. I'm not sure the legality of scanning EDGE magazine though. Anyone know? As for the other 7 reviews here they all are:

1. Elite - BBC
2. Exile - BBC
3. Dungeon Master - Amiga/Atari ST
4. Rogue - PC
5. Captain Blood - Amiga/Atari ST
6. Pilotwings - Super Nintendo
7. Sonic the Hedgehog - Megadrive
8. Powerdrome - Amiga

If you want the magazines and are willing to pay £6.00 (Mag+Euro Delivery)for the magazine then you can still get a copy. They don't post just to the UK only they'll post them out all over the world.

UK - £5
Europe - £6
Rest of the World - £8

Send them an e-mail and ask if they can send you the two mags. It shouldn't cost no more than £13.00 for both of them. It's worth it. These two magazines should me in every Dungeon Master fans collection.

Edge magazine own the copyright on these articles and anyone wishing to publish them will need to obtain permission first. Which is exactly what I'm trying to do for both these articles so that I can include them on my Dungeon Master site (still under construction!).

http://www.dmcodex.com

Still, I'm not too worried: I already had most of the info in the "making of..." article you mentioned well before it was published by Edge... :-)

For those of you still waiting for my site: I had a very bad 2002, both personally and professionally and did no work on the site. I am hoping to address this over the next few months, so that the first version will go on-line sometime in late spring/early summer. Thanks for your patience!

Just letting you UK Dungeon Master fans know that Edge magazine have released a new RETRO magazine. If you missed out on "The Making of... Dungeon Master" the first time round then this is your chance to see it. This new RETRO magazine contains loads of Edge's past "The Making of..." articles plus some new ones like the wonderfull Speedball 2 and Civilization. The best article is of course "The Making of... Dungeon Master". Not to be missed!
