Magic Map Icons

Post by Gambit37 »

Would it be possible to make it so that the icons specified for use in the editor are automatically used by the Magic Map?

Or at the very least, could we specify new bitmaps for the magic map icons? It would be useful if it could be extended too so that pillars are shown on the map (and any clones thereof).

On the whole a kool idea, although I would restrict the display a little, say blue blob for Clothes, purple blob for food/water-skin/chests. Not give too much away, as the original CSB map was. You could tantilise players with an object they couldn't get to or see with a wall eye spell but could see on the map. Although this would involve 2 new spells, I'm sure as I always seem to say, this can't be too hard.

I wasn't thinking for items, I was thinking more for cloned pillars / furniture. CSB didn't show items, only corbum/zokathra.

Might make the map cluttered, maybe limit it to a general 'item' marker on a tile- so it could be a monster, could be an item, could be a whole set of items
you can further use the monster detect spell to differentiate, or take the risk and rush in...

Yes I wasn't thinking of every individual, just general catagories, if GG added say 2 map spells assignable at design-time, you could assign what say food and drink to one and clothes and weapons to the other.

Personally I don't favour adding more complexity to the map by showing items. I think it takes some of the mystery out of the dungeon. I just want things like pillars/furniture to show up because it's a bit silly at the moment that you have this massive pillar blocking your way yet it's shown as empty space on the map....

Agreed, this is why I suggest adding these options at design rather than simply add them to the default spell list. Certainly add "statics", they NEED to be seen really.

Icons for the magic map can be specified for each individual object (so you could, if you wanted, have different icons for each different type of monster rather than just being able to change the flashing green blob) for V0.35.
