Help me complete dungeon master ... i'm desperate !!!

Post by FutureBoy »

Hi All,

I used to play Dungeon Master on my ST years ago and on my SNES after that, but i never finished it and its been bugging me ever since (many failed attempts due to running out of food and not being clever enough .. .well i was only 10 when it first came out).
So i'm gonna give it one final go, so i was wondering what would be the best format to play dungeon master on?

If i play it on a certain format can i carry my characters on to the sequels? Which fomat is the best overall? etc

Is there any other tips you could give me (best characters etc), i dont think i could face not completing it another time !!!!!!

There's lots of versions of DM out there, I think, but the one I use is George Gilbert's Return to Chaos (RTC) from ragingmole.com, which has the original DM as well as CSB. You can also play RTC, which is basically DM and then it goes straight into CSB I think...but in RTC the spell runes are turned off and you have a spellbook - you can't use a rune until you've found it on a scroll in the dungeon and scribed it into the book. I prefer playing DM Original since I can use Fireballs from the start, muahahahahhaa .
Anyway, as for tips on what characters to take, I suppoes it depends on how you want to play it. That kind of thing has been discussed here before and it seems that some names come up a lot (for example a lot of people seem to use Wuuf, or maybe it's just 'cause he's cute ;)), but really I think it depends how you play and what kind of challenge you like. Something like that anyway :).

Both CSBWin and RTC include DM original AND CSB. For reusing old characters RTC is very well suited, because you can reimport any old character into any dungeon.

if you like trouble, play RTC with the runebook (especially when you're in the beholder lever and you cannot cast fireballs yet !!) ;)
if you prefer original DM, play CSBwin with the DM map : this is the exact copy of the ST version.
the 4 best characters imho : daroou (ninja/fight), hawk (priest/fight), wuuf (wizard) and elijah (very good in all categories)

you can download the basic package from the dm & csb encyclopaedia (link above in the pull down) and you can downlaod the engine upgrades from the link indicated i nthe first post of the csbwin forum

a new 9.7 release combining these two is coming though, if you care to hold on (timing unknown though!). You can't directly port your dm characters to csb though, so RTC is definitely the one to go for just now if you want to play both through. CSBwin has a much wider range of custom dungeons for when you have mastered the originals : )
