First time through *don't post spoilers*
Hey, all. I'm new to this board (Selie's boyfriend that she drug into all of this, actually) and new to DM, as well.
I just started my game, but so far it has been a ton of fun. I can see why you guys are so into it. Anyway, just thought I'd say hey and open up a new topic to talk in. I'm a little wary of opening up old topics because I don't want to stumble across stuff I haven't seen yet.

He says "just started" because it was two days ago, but as of this posting he's in the middle of floor 4 (if you count HOC as 1).
*pokes BFS* This would be where you introduce your characters, too. So people know who you're playing as and stuff. Then they can all go "oh, I know __, good choice!" and everything.

wow, first time through, using only two characters and already at level four - nice start!
and nah, i've never rated gothmog either - give me the bigger mana characters to a journeyman wizard : ) Hawk in RTC i actually found a good choice, gains skills well and had good 'stamina'.
Since you've stated the preference thought i'd change the topic header a bit too, hope you don't mind

I always seemed to choose the same four characters.. I tried nearly everyone but for me a winning combination seemed to be either
Halk, Nabi, Syra, and Gothmog
or
Daroo, Nabi, Syra, and Gothmog.
Taking a large hulking character as the main defender of the group and gothmog as the wisend wizard and then nabi.. the accomplished healer and syra the student type that I could shove in every direction.
To be honest though.. I never fully went into their stats.. I've tried a few times but really for me it was always their appearance and some of their main skill sets that made me choose.. I looked at it like an interactive fantasy book.. thus the reason I did the fan fictions on my other site. Them having an imagined origin is what got me into the game. It let me think that I was fighting for a greater cause..

BFS is playing right now and I'm on the computer with the internet connection. Oh man. He's on like ... level 9, I think, with HOC as 1. It might even be 10. It's insane. I'm going to make him play CSB if he continues this game at this rate, because it's just insane. I was pleased to learn that my memories of the Arena (level
were pretty accurate, to a point. And I'm not looking forward to going down there myself.
I'm almost done with my costume. This means I'm going to start playing soon - I'll be lucky to go through a level a week! And this is with knowing some of the spells at the beginning, and looking over BFS's shoulder when I'm not sewing.

Modern games can seem to be blast ed through in a weekend with some dedicated play, and once you know how to do DM you can actually do it in about four hours, but to get this far on a first try is ...depressing! All of us have memories of taking a while to get throuigh. Sure, we were younger, naive, foolish, and distracted by shiny objects...still. I am very impressed here!
Definitely, try CSB next! Actually, play DM again trying to find a few more of the secrets, and with one player first (reincarnated for extra fun), then try CSB : )
Selie - that was always the fun of DM aswell, once you knew what a level was like, alot of the time it was 'oh great, not THERE. when you played it again

I missed one of the Rah keys, though! I'm having to back track all over and I can't get the 'Clockwise' 'Turn back' (Or whatever the other one says... The square-shaped corridor that you have to walk through properly to get to different places) to work in reverse. I'm having a great time, though. The game is tons of fun. I've got Hawk running around with the diamond edge and Gothmog using Fury, but mostly the use level 6 fireballs. So far the worst monster for me are those stupid hornet/bee things! They attack so fast and poison so often. They make my party sad...
I'm not sure what floor I'm on (Or how many floors there are, actually), but the one with the hidden pits and the black non-material flame is the deepest I've been. Like I said, I missed stuff on the upper levels and am having to backtrack, so I'm not really to that level yet. If I can't find my way back up, water might become a problem, though!

if you solved it one way, you'll get it another way!
the pits/flames level is level 13 (if HoC = 1) and is very deep
yeah, having to go back the long way is painful...having the ability to fireball that powerfully is always good, while DM has lots of subtle shifts in monster defenses, you can also just blast your way out of trouble alot of the time : )

Hmm, strange...you all seem to say Gothmog isn't very good...but since I've been playing DM from downloading it with RTC, I've been using him along with Hissssa, Wuuf, and Gando (all reincarnated and therefore renamed though
). I complete the game with no real problems from any of them, provided I give the back pair (Wuuf and Gando) a chance at melee against a few Screamers and stuff so they have some hps...first time I played with that party I got to CSB and Fippy had about 75 hps lol.
I suppose it all just comes down to how you play the game...I don't tend to get up close in melee too often unless it's against, like, a skelly or a Screamer...I prefer to use, as much as often, that most powerful of weapons in the whole of the dungeons...the doors >:).

I did it. Wooo~ Just killed Mr. Chaos. I had a few problems with him, but not because of combat. I sat and fought with him forever before deciding that there was something I had missed in the dragon's lair. The real problem came in once I had the completed firestaff... The fluxcages would crash my game if I had too many of them out at once.
I did break down and look at a faq to see what floor my last Ra Key was on. I'm glad I did, too. Somehow I had the notion that there were 4 Ra keys and I was avoiding going down to the level with the animated armor and the fire elemental in the fall room until I had found the third Ra Key... Needless to say, the one I was missing was on the floor I was holding off on.
In the end, my boys looked like this:
Lo Master Fighter
Adept Ninja
Lo Master Priest
Um Master Wizard
Same for both...
Hawk was using the Inquisitor and Gothmog ended up with the hand-me-down Diamond Edge, until he was on firestaff duty, at least...
That was a ton of fun, and I definitely feel the replay value kicking in as my brain thinks of various limitations or specifications to put on my party next time I play through. But I think Selie is going to make me start on CSB before I do anymore play throughs of DM. Do you make new characters for CSB or do you import your old ones? Something Selie said made me think that you imported old ones, but that may just be me remembering incorrectly.

Nice one! I think you may want to replay DM first while it's fresh in your mind...maybe bang around for false walls a little more, check out the arena a little more...and one character, definitely!
And lol, Wu Tse actually sounds liek some calming herbal tea. And to end much speculation, Wu Tse IS a woman

Wu Tse is the best character in game, at least for my style of playing. She lacks a bit of stamina, but you can get around this with some minutes training, especially when playing solo. Her regeneration of Life/Mana in total is the best of all, with a focus on mana, which i need more than life. Chani and Boris are close to equal, the 4th in that team would be wuuf (so much about my 2 girls and a pet caster-team).
