You're using an 'originally pirated' copy of the game. There's info on the copy protection and how it causes game failures here:

http://dmweb.free.fr/FFCopyProtection.htm

You need to get hold of a 'good' copy or download one of the version to play under emulation.

yeah I tried to play with a back up of my disk. I didn't want it to get destroyed so those I could back up I always did and would just use the copy. Turns out though that when I would play things like that would happen.. or sometimes going up stairs on certain levels would hang or reboot the game.. so I figured it was copy protection.. so I just ended having to keep using the orriginal disk

There are so many available versions of the game here already.. with no issues. CSBWin has maps for DM as well as CSB.. RTC also has them.. try one of those.

Ha! seems DM wasnt ahead of its time in only the usual fields :)
How to detect an original or a copy?

On an Atari ST with 1 MB of memory (so that all the game fits in memory), you can know if the game is an original. If there are short disk accesses while playing (mostly when changing levels), that means the copy protection is probably still there.
Wasnt there an interview, where one of the developers said, that they worked in random disk checks from time to time, so that the player would think something big is coming up...probably around the next corner?
..and with the torch burned down and the health 'n stamina with it..ahh!

Yes, I recall that interview (though not sure where it was printed, maybe ST Action?). However, given what we now know about the *real* reason for disk accesses, it may be that was a little fib on behalf of FTL. Still, I do distinctly recall those disk accesses while playing, and they definitaly *don't* happen when changing levels...

I love FTL!

Kinda amazing that DM is still good to reveal something new after all those years since it was released.
I'm wondering how it's gonna be 2007, at the 20th anniversity of its release, will it still be as strong as now...during conflux II times? will there be multiplayer Dungeon Master? will there be cloned screamers roaming the woods? questions over questions..

I remember it always seemed to happen the first time outside that door on the first floor. The one which behind it has a torch, boots, two keys, and some white trousers... Scared me loads when I was ickle and used to try and play... I didn't dare go in!

I've used my original DM disk, which was borrowed off someone my dad knew (this was probably over 10 years ago? Dunno when I first played it) so many times, and it STILL works today!!!

Compare it to any of my PC disks, they are notoriously unreliable and crappy! Dungeon Master will always have a place in my heart. It's beautiful blue diskette, a shining beacon of hope...

You should be able to play it under Win XP or 2000. It should look and sound EXACTLY like the original Atari ST versions. You should be able to select a party in DM. Modify the characters stats and looks in an EASY way, not those uncomprehendable programs wich I couldn't figure out how to use. How am I supposed to extract a 'graphics.dat' file out of a disk image??? AND...after I've beaten Lord Chaos I should be able to transfer the party into CSB. That is my dream!

In 2007 you'll strap on a virtual reality suit and be able to walk around the dungeon yourself.

Makes me wonder if anyone thought about turning Dungeon Master into a Dungeons & Dragons adventure. I'm fairly sure Eye of the Beholder is available as a D&D adventure...
