Annoying, help please

Post by PeterNem »

Hi all
I'm a 21 year old student and last played dungeon master on my Atari back when it was first released. I atteirute playing this game at a very young age to my good memory and logic skills to this day.

Unfortauntely I never completed the game.

I have recently (a few days ago) found the excellent CSBwin program that lets me play the game natively under windows.

I'm playing with charachers:

Hawk (Craftsman Fighter, Craftsman Nija, Craftsman Priest, Adept Wizard)
Iaido (Artisan Fighter,Craftsman Nija,Craftsman Priest, Adept Wizard)
Zed ( Journeyman Fighter,Artisan Nija, Artisan Priest, Adept Wizard)
Wuuf ( Apprentice Fighter, Adept Nija, Artisan Priest, Expert Wizard)

It's taken a couple of days but I have managed to get to the point that I got stuck and gave in when I was younger... I am on Level 5 (the one that starts with the riddle room with alcoves that require the Gem, Bow and Coin).

I have got the Iron keys and gone though the doors etc and got the Vorpal blade. I have just gone through a door which closed behind you. There is a locked door ahead which I cannot open and to the right a forcefield which flickers on and off. I've been trying for anhour and am close to giving up again. I've had my characters put a load of stuff down to speed them up but am still having no luck.

Any hints and tips? This is really annoying.

Just seen the following on the walkthru:
you see a flashing teleport with a door on other side and another teleport after it..when u try to run past it. throws you back to where you started..<FRUSTRATING>...it takes timing and practice...time it just right with two quick keystrokes forward..if you hit forward too many times, you'll run past door and into forcefield on other side, knocking you back to start again....your also gonna have to open gate..by running up and pressing open button before field throws you back...if u time it right, you should land under doorway in between the two fields, then time it for the other side and jump through...get needed key..get back out!

Hello there! It's exactly as the walkthrough says -- you just need perfect timing.

It helps to position the mouse cursor where the button will be, and use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move the party -- this gives you better control. It's actually pretty easy once you get used to it: move when the teleporter's just about to go off.

What's "atteirute"?

make sure you unload chests etc into the corridor before you attempt it - by level 6 you will have armour and weapons and chests and probably charatcers will be in the yellow. too slow for this puzzle

also, you can throw zo spells to open the door for you, if you are having a hard time hitting the button

Right on Beo, I always use a Zo spell to open the door. You also need good timing to cast it on the door, but it makes things really easier.

I used a Zo spell on the door straight off, so hitting the door button is not the problem.

Even with my characters all unloaded however I'm still having trouble getting getting the timing right. I've just spent another 30 mins trying, and am using the cursor keys to i can hit forward twice in succession really quick.

perhaps too quickly?
also, are you just repeatidly trying the cursor keys? i foudn this once playing, the rhythimn of trying matches the teleporters, so if you keep pressing forwards you will keep transporting

odd, if you are using CSBwin ytou can makie a recording...if you think there is a buig, then send it to Paul Stevens and he can perhaps see what is going on...

Did you check that no part of your body is wounded? You could also send us a savegame so we try it.

Is your computer running the game too slowly?

There are two teleporters, ne before the door and one after it.

Use open door (X6) to open the door first,
Unload toons so they move as quick as possible,
Avoid teleport 1 and stop in the doorway,
Avoid teleport 2 and you have done it.

... that's the way to do it (and i always did), because the teleporters/hazes appear at different phases.

Hi again all.

Still havent done it.

FAO "Guest" who posted above, I am aware of the layout of the doors and teleporters, my problem is that I can't even get past the first one!! I will try and upload my saved game tonight (I am not home at the moment) and maybe somebody else would be able to give it a try.

How do I go about making a recording from within CSBWin?

Oh, and I have tried it with the game speed set from everything from stupidly slow to amazingly fast!

One comment above... two of my charchters have wounded bodyparts. Would this affect speed, and if so, how do I get them to heal?

Just give them a Vi potion...the level of the potion heals that amont of injuries, ie if they have two injured body parts you need to give them an Um-level (second level) potion to heal them - a Lo level one would only heal one body part.

Wounds always slow you down -- that's the first thing you should have checked and it was mentioned above. No wonder you're having problems! ;)

I havent actually played the game since the wound comment was made, it's not that I'm ignoring it !! I've never realised how to heal wounds until this thread, and just always left them and eventually they'd go.

I'll be sure to try this tonight.

Impressive that you got that far without healing the wounds! I never realised they would heal if you left them long enough, I thought they were long term cripplings....!

I never realised they faded over time either...but since if you've taken an injur it normally means your hp is pretty low, you'd be giving them a potion (and therefore noticing the bandage disappear) anyway so...

It's amazing how much I can still learn about the game after more than 20 times of playing it to the end. I never knew that that door could be opened with a ZO spell, and I also never realized that wounds heal after a while.
