When is a rock not a rock?

Actually, there were two versions of the wording. In earlier versions it was "When is a rock not a rock?" but it confused so many people that FTL later changed it to "When is rock not rock?".
People were getting stuck because they were thinking 'a rock' is something small, whereas 'rock' generally suggests something larger like a wall...
