Count Zero

Post by Lunever »

http://www.dungeon-master.com/forum/vie ... highlight=

So, do we count the HoC as Level 0 (and thus the screamer/mummy-level to be level 1) or do we count the HoC as Level 1 (and thus the screamer/mummy-level to be level 2)?

Lunever - I've slightly changed the phrasing of the question to make it clearer; the gist and options remain the same though!

BTW, the screamer / mummy level is definitely level 1

Nooooo! That's what all the discussion has been about!!! Do sane people start counting with zero? (I do not count myself into the sane part of the regulars).

So I hope you don't mind that I changed it back.

But then I can't vote for either option and the poll as you phrased it doesn't make any sense.

I don't count the HoC as level 0 or level 1, it's just the HoC. I start counting at number 1 and start with the screamer / mummy level!

I won't re-re-change your question, but I suggest you do!

Yes. Sane people start counting from zero.

Oh wait.... programmers aren't sane.

George! Haha, gotya! You DO count the HoC to be level 0, at least according to the editor written by you ;-)

Ah, that's only the editor - it's easier to start at 0 for that rather than swapping naming / numbering schemes.

Personally I call the HoC, the HoC - I never refer to it as level 0 myself.

Ok, I did change it back as requested by you George, and I hope that the current phrasing includes all different points of view to a sufficient degree.

Umm, it sounds like you are trying to define a standard - I personally won't change how I refere to it regardless of the poll, I will just tekll my reference if it is needed.

Change the wording back so it's just a nice poll of interest

*sigh* better now?

Next poll I'll make will try to get a majority for removing all edit buttons from the forum...

Computers like to start counting from 0. There's no point in wasting an index, so to call the HoC level 0 makes good sense.

Yes, let's all call the HoC level 3 and the screamer/mummy level 4! :D

But, seriously, I consider the HoC to be level 1. It's just always been that way and there is no need to change it. And yes, in programming languages array indices tend to start from 0 (except in pascal), but otherwise it doesn't really make a difference. Although, usually you don't want your pointers to be 0 either. But! We're not (or maybe some of us are  ) computers and we get to choose.

Hmm.. Now I've got it! Let the HoC level be a NaN (Not a Number) and the screamer/mummy level is 0..

Oops. I evened it out.

Does anyone actually say "level one"? It seems like all you guys are saying "the screamer level." "The dragon level." "The choose your fate level." I say we do away with numbers entirely. That would make us even more eccentric.

I often refer to levels by the monsters: worm level, rat level etc.

I also often refer to levels by monsters, but only because if I or someone else says "Level 2" it's not clear what level we talk about.

I always refer to every level by a number. Level 11 is the one with the three ways and the Water Elementals, Level 8 is where the Skeleton staircase starts and so on... Same goes for CSB, each level there is identified by a number in my brain there as well.

Like the year 0 AD. Totally missing from the calendar.
Someone else disliked the name 'Zero' for some reason.
Fortunately, the clock starts at 12 midnight so that
all the zero-phobics won't get too upset.

If we had given alphabetic letter names to the levels then
I suppose the Hall of Champions would have had to
have been called 'B' to avoid disturbing those same folks.

When you are halfway through the HOC then you are
at level 1.5????

0 AD was made up though. If you think about it, before 0AD they didnt call the year "Year Negative 1" did they? It was some guys decision to make 0AD non existance, resulting in 1 AD - 1BC = 1. There was no hall of champions before the hall of champions, so the hall of champions is what we make of it.

I hereby announce from now until the end of days, I will call the hall of champions level "Whatapukatawrahfaluckatrupastupavubawraba"

And theres nothing you can do stop me.

Actually, this is not true in the country where I live. 20 minutes past midnight is called "0:20" here.

That's just the 24 hour clock for those of us who want to know if it is night or day without confusing our heads with am/pm. As far as I know the military representation does not have a colon so it's just 1800 hours etc. Don't know if midnight should be then 0000.

And I see the giraffe has left the building.. Makes me wonder if the results have been tampered since the question keeps changing from time to time..

Enjoyed the riposting on this one. I count the Hall of Champions level as level #1.
Why? Because it is a level.
Added to that, I've noticed some newbies have asked me questions, in the past, about the first level.
(hee, hee, never been asked about the Zero level)

The best question ever was that of my cousin many years ago, who asked how to open the very first gate on level 0 (at the end of HoC)... he didn't pick any champions so there was nobody to step on the pad... :D

(well, he's not the smartest guy ever, but he's a very good and nice man)
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

I recall that in LUA the arrays start at '1' and are not zero based. funny how this thing turns around 4 years later.
