small squares next to portrait..purpose?

small squares next to portrait..purpose?

I was wondering what these small squares next to the character portrait would be used for?
I did never play Theron´s Quest and noticed this just now!

At first I thought rings or the like, but maybe these are there because of an control issue of the pc engine?(no mouse maybe)

According to the Theron's Quest manual, they are defense indicators. I think this means they light up when you have the three different magical defenses (physical defense, spellshield, and fireshield) activated, replacing the dotted border that you see in PC DM.
