Dungeon Master?!

Post by BinaryBandit »

I'm just curious. Dungeon Master was one of my first games on the Amiga. The PC version looks and feels just about the same.

It looked great back in those day. However, it looks kinda `dull' now. With all the amazing games released for the PC (Diablo2, Icewind-dale, Heroes of M&M, NOX, Soulbringer,etc...) Why would someone still play a game such as Dungeon Master?

It kinda makes me giggle when someone tells me he has been playing DM for close to ten years now. :-)

Can someone enlighten me?

Chaos perhaps?

I bet you have good memories of your Amiga days with Dungeon Master  . It was a great game of it's time and yes, it has been surpassed in graphics, sounds and just about everything. Yet there is some 'magic' in it. It is like those good old B&W movies. If something had become outdated, doesn't mean it's useless :) .

I liked DM, always has, and I guess I will for years to come. It's speciality hasn't diminished over the years for me. Granted, I rarely play it now, but each time I start it, it brings good memories and for me that is as important as the game itself.

Also DM has something many games today lack. Gameplay, addictivity, intuitivity. I'm all fed with all those C&C clones (starting from Dune II). Who really wants another Quake (or DOOM for that matter)?

The fact I like DM doesn't mean I don't like some new games too (or that I have obsolete computer  . I rank many games better than DM infact: Thief I+II, System Shock II for example. I would put Diablo II into that category if it wasn't too unstable on my machine...

Hmm... Now that I look back at what I have written, it seems I lost my point (if there ever was one  in all that ranting  ...
Oh well, if anyone becames any wiser and better person because of my post I have done my service to mankind. I'm off to play some Subspace now!

DM ! (?)

Post by BinaryBandit »

Well said Toni. I agree with you on most of the things you said. We did indeed had alot of fun with the Amigas. Infact i still got two of them (A100 and a 500) Got like 3000 floppies of `stuff' to go with it. I used to run a board and had some friends who did the same.

Dungeon Master was a great game. But now i'm spoiled. With the PIII-600, voodoo, etc... All these new games look and feel mighty good. DM just can't compare. I know what your saying, but the same time i can't even bare to look at it. Chunky graphics, no 360 deegree turns, no MUSIC while playing, etc...

Let's just say Diablo2 runs stable on my machine. :-)

Best Regards...

Oh i wanted to ask you... Do you play DM on the Amiga or PC or the Amiga Emulator? If it's the Amiga Emulator then which one? Fellow? or the `other'?

DM still chugging along

DM is better than Quake, Diablo, and Half Life put *TOGETHER*! Just my $0.02. Oh and listen to "Pornography" by The Cure while playing DM and you'll thank me later :)

A DM playing song

Post by Ian Clark »

I have just stumbled across DM song. It is an old Pulp demo called 'Take You Back', it has a spooky, repeated keyboard with Jarvis whispering some spooky lyrics over the top of it, then it breaks into a loud, drummed, shouted section.

Also, Air's 'Virgin Suicides' score is great for playing DM to...
Ian

Memories of DM / Preferred game types

Post by Gambit37 »

I agree with Toni's comments. Even though DM has been surpassed in terms of graphics and sound, it doesn't mean that it's a bad game. In fact, DM is probably the single most revolutionary game I ever played, and like Toni, I have fond memories of my youth when I think of the times I played DM and CSB. DM was the first game that I played that had any real atmosphere, and for that alone it should be remebered and re-enjoyed. Like most 'firsts' in life - your first kiss, your first date, your first bunjee jump - you always remember the first time you played DM and I don't ever want to forget the sense of awe that it gave me, or the jumping out my chair when a fader appeared from nowehere and fireballed me... those were the days. Gamers who have only known the 3d accelerated games of the nineties have been a bit spoilt, so it's not surprising that a 'modern, young' gamer would not find DM anything to rave about. But if you were there the first time around, you'll know what made it special.

Interestingly, I share similar tastes to Toni - Thief is an execllent game and I have recently started playing both Thief 2 and Shock 2. This leads me to wonder if DM fans share a common style of 'preferred' game that they play. To all the other DM fans reading this board, what other PC games do you enjoy and why? My faves are Thief1&2 (great stroy, good characterisation and masses of atmosphere), Half-Life (same reasons as Thief), the Tomb Raider series (for the exploration - not Lara!), Duke Nukem 3D (for sheer fun and playability), Unreal (gorgeous graphics though not hugely playable) and Resident Evil 2 (damn scary!).

Anyone else?

Part nostalgia, part great feeling. The 90 degrees turns give it a tactical aspect which is hard to duplicate. The combat and magic systems really are much more evocative than just pressing 4 to get up the machine gun. The possibility to level in more than one class at a time is genius. The lack of dialogue and information really kindles my imagination; why is the Inquisitor named the Inquisitor? Who made it? Why? It also lends greater weight to the scrolls and writings on the walls. You get the feeling of being and explorer with so many questions and so few answers.

The graphics are maybe not up to date but they have a cartoon quality after all these years; when I read Donald Duck I dont expect Donald to look like a real duck. In the same way I dont expect blue ogres to be 3D- rendered and life like. Granted I maybe wouldnt feel this way if the sense of wonder from when I was 8 and played it the first time didnt still linger with me but I think I could pick up this game now and still be addicted. There are so many aspects within the game that's possible to explore.

There are few modern games that can bring up this kind of feeling. System shock II is very close, though ;)
