false, fake, illusion trick walls

Post by PaulH »

This has been mentioned in posts before, but the way the above, whatever they may be :-) are implemented into CSBuild can be a little confusing. In my opinion, an 'illusion' wall is exactly that: an illusion. It is not a wall. You can see it as a wall, it looks like a wall but it does not impede your path ie can walk straight through it. A blocking wall? All walls block. But some can be moved due to their mechanics. DMute showed this well with a different graphic for an 'illusion', a wall that can be moved that is present, and a wall that can move back to a position, which is obviously not. Imagine the latter two as a door that can be opened and closed.
Any way, just my opinion, and would make designing, reviewing and reading files easier.

It would seem there are four possibilities:
1) Visible and blocking
2) Visible and non-blocking.
3) Invisible and blocking
4) Invisible and non-blocking.

I have two pictures. Are you suggesting that I assign
those two pictures differently? That is easy. Are you
suggesting that I have 4 pictures? That is more difficult.

Invisible and blocking, ie a wall you cannot see but impedes, is something I didn't mention. I have never 'seen' one in any dungeon I have played!
I think I am suggesting 4 pictures. Though I can live without it!

Perhaps I could use the two I have and color them green
instead of black if they are non-blocking. That might be
a bit easier. Would that do?

I put a dungeon.dat with such a wall at

At the moment it seems that the blocking abilities are not shown in CSBuild - only the visibility has its equivalent (either the cross through the tile is bold if visble=yes, otherwise it is not). I could not see any green colours in that file (download of dungeon.dat from 2004-01-13 00:33).

Here's a proposal:

- Visible, but fake (non-blocking): show a normal wall tile coloured differently (e.g. green) and include the "normal" (non-bold) cross
- Visible, blocking (triggered by mechanisms): <coloured> wall tile + bold cross
- Invisible, non-blocking: show only the normal cross
- Invisible, blocking: show only the bold cross.

Hope this makes sense.

PitD's proposal makes sense. I have subtley altered the tiles anyway to customize so I can look at a level easier
