[Done for V0.38] Exterminator squares

Post by beowuuf »

This was from a suggestion in the DMJ board, but I think it would be good. Simply put a square that would exterminate instantly a creature that was on it.

doable:
I think having it pulsing only would be best, so that a) triggering it wouldn't leave it on, and b) you could trigger it to kill a monster with another one inside, and the second one wouldn't get caught in the effect. This would be a good way to have monster behaviour change. You could have a guard in a shop that is non-aggressive, but if you take an item then this triggers the exterminator square and an aggressive guard is dropped that will come after you.

not doable:
Also exterminator squares could be used to kill unkillable monsters if certain conditions are met...

Another possibility is having a party death square. Stepping onto this square ends the game as if the party died, straightforward enough. It would be a good way top indicate a party is facing an impossible foe or situation - imagine facing Lord Chaos without the friestaff, and this somehow triggers a text pad saying 'wahahah' and the party dies..making him more scary.

*tennis racket noise*
knocked back from archive for two indicated points (though i only care about party death now, and not really inveeested in it..still...cool idea...)

To re-iterate, there is a difference between ending the game by giving huge damage, which you will notice, and just ending the game right off...

Like a gamebook, you can have a text 'you have been imprisoned in the prison of prisoners, form which there is no escape...' then the game ends... just seems cleaner and more atmospheric

And for example grey lords are indestructable, even a damage tile wouldn't take them out...there may be times when you want to kill the unkillable as long as the party complete everything successfully...

You can do party death with the damage tile already.. though clearly you can't a specific game ending attached to it.

The other stuff can all be done in one way or another with the current mechanisms.

15 all. Who's serve?

lol, curse my distracted editing of previous posts : )

see the clarification above...really, it's not important as you said you can do it other ways, but as i found playtesting conflux, 'unkillable' monsters aren't if you have the patience or be stupid, unless you really make them unkillable with unltimate grey lord immunity, in which case you need teleporting and thta sort of shenanigans, which means you can't always target death effects for droppages back to where the creature was before without resitracting it's stomping ground of placing large mechanics to back it up

and the party death thing was just for being clean...for example huge damage in a prison or endless corridor is just an obvious mechanic that detracts form the game...

Don't we have the "unlimited health" option for monsters now? THey are still able to be killed, huh? What did I miss there...?

CSB4win has that, can't rememebr what RTC has...maybe it does...but then that definitely means a monster killing square is needed : )

That's what I meant - but wasn't there some way to sneak around that in CSBwin? Like healing an invincible monster (however that is done) and by that action make it killable? *triestocollectmemory*

There must be something wrong with me. I read that as "testicular mammary"... something that might look a little odd if someone actually owned one....

Ok, sorry to burst your bubble, but wouldnt the "one touch one kill" tiles make the game too easy on certain points ? Are there unkillable monsters in the game ? never met one...

Exterminator squares can affect the player AND monsters as much or as little as you want; it's up to the dungeon designer how it's used.

As for dungeon 'rearrangement'....!!! Yes, RTC allows you to build your own dungeons, change all the graphics (nearly), create new monsters based on old ones (not totally new ones yet), add sounds, different graphics per level, pillars, damage tiles, new weapons and wans (based on existing ones), the list goes on. If you've not already grabbed it, I suggest you download it and take a look (use the quick links menu at the top of the page).

This is now do-able in V0.38 by using a combination of damage squares, teleporters, converts (for the monsters) and speech to print out your specific end of game messages.
